Very Provocative View of the Art of Breathing

This is a very interesting book that disputes some commonly held theories on breathing. The main contention is that we benefit from breathing less than from breathing more and that, as a result, there is an increase in oxygen and CO2. Surprisingly, this increase in CO2 is a positive influencee on our health. The author provides numerous scientific studies backing up his assertions and it appears that there is more than enough evidence supporting these studies. However, these scientific studies are voluminous, somewhat lengthy and important only to the most scientific minded readers. Perhaps these studies should have been indexed rather than placed in the text of the book. Lastly, although the author does a first rate job in proving this theory, he does very little in explaining the technique. This technique of breathing was developed by Konstantin Buteyco and is very similar to some ancient yogic practices. Further information can be obtained from the internet under Buteyco. There are also several breathing devices including the Frolov Device, Ultrabreathe, Expand-A-Lung and others that can be used in conjunction with the Buteyco Technique for quicker progress.

This book is really eye-opening, even to a longtime practitioner of yoga. I guess I never fully understood just how important breathing properly really is. After reading this book, I know I will get even more benefit from my yoga sessions.

don't do yoga until you read this first!

This book was so good I couldn't stop reading until I finished the entire thing. If you are new to the Buteyko breathing method then you might not know any of the info in this book. I have read a lot on the subject but still learned some new things from this book. I can't wait until the author comes out with the second yoga breathing book! I need to apply this knowledge like now. Buy this book before you even think about joining a yoga class or doing it at home!

The main theme: A collection of seamless-back models

In recent years, we can find that every book of Montroll is trying to solve a technic problem of origami. "Origami in side out" creates models of two colors using of a single paper, "Mythological creatures and Chinese zodiac" struggles to make creating animals a routine formula. And this new book is trying to make "seamless back" animals. Models in his former book "Origami sculpture" are excellent, despite almost of them are not seamless-backed. Now in this book Montroll shows us how to fold legs, head and tail from the edges of a paper, leaving the center to be the back. At the same time Montroll continues to make creating models a nature and understandable process. This is a different approach from other BASE-based folders. Besides, when folding in wet, effects of models in this book are well. However, I think this approach can be more mature, for some aethetic reason .

More of the same

Montroll's books usually rate 5 stars when compared with other origami books in the market but when compared with his other books, it rates only 3 stars, or average, hence the title, "more of the same". People who have folded many of Montroll's models would know what I mean.
I have all if not most of Montroll's books. His later books generally do not rate higher than "Origami for the Enthusiast" or "Animal Origami for the Enthusiast".
I would prefer if he is able to put in at least three or more extra complex models like his lobster, crab and stegosaurus in every new book he produces.
This book generally follows the same pattern as most of his books and the models are in the intermediate range. The wet folding technique mentioned in the book does not raise this book above his other books (note I compare with his other books, not origami books in general). I did not see any new models which makes me excited and wanted to fold immediately. I will probably keep this book for a slow day.
If you are new to Montroll's models, this book would interest you and recommended. If not, it depends on you, a Montroll fan or not. The usual topics are there. Montroll's models are usually easy to follow and fold and a worthwhile book to purchase for those who have not seen that many Montroll's books.
John Montroll, if you are reading this, I am waiting for Montroll to produce a book on origami insects and/or origami vehicles. Remember to add at least 3 super complex models to satisfy old time fans like me.

Another collections of Montroll.

It's merely an another collection of models by Montroll. Most of them ranked about above-med difficulty level. While it's a good book for new folders, I really hope I can find some challenges in it (but I fail). In my opinion, as a famous folder, Montroll should as well develope some new models as show his long-time devotees(like me) some incredible ones. Besides, origami art has been developed to a splendid state, but, alas, this newest book of a international renowned folder cannot reflect this. After all, we have had enough elephants, birds, cats and dogs from Montroll and other folders.

Starred Review. In a much-publicized case, David Irving, the author of numerous books about WWII, sued Emory University historian Lipstadt and her British publisher, Penguin, for libel. Lipstadt had called Irving a Holocaust denier in a book about the Holocaust denial movement, and Britain's libel laws put the burden of proof on her to show that the charge was true. Did that mean proving the Holocaust had happened? Was Lipstadt, as Irving claimed, trying to restrict his freedom of speech, or was he restraining hers? Was the courtroom the proper place to examine historical truth? The press hotly debated these issues, but as Lipstadt relates in this powerful account, she and her adept lawyers felt they simply had to discredit a man who had said that "no documents whatsoever show that a Holocaust had ever happened." In 2000, Judge Charles Gray decided in Lipstadt's favor, finding it "incontrovertible" that Irving was a Holocaust denier. The drama of the book lies in the courtroom confrontations between an evasive and self-contradictory Irving (serving as his own lawyer) and Lipstadt's strategically brilliant barrister, Richard Rampton, and the scholars who testified in her defense. Lipstadt herself is a reluctant heroine, a feisty, outspoken woman forced to remain silent (she did not testify in court) and let her lawyers speak for her. Adult/High School–In Denying the Holocaust (Penguin, 1994), Lipstadt called Irving, an English author of books on World War II and the Third Reich, the most dangerous Holocaust denier because his works were reviewed in mainstream journals and he commanded a certain level of respect and influence in the field. Irving later sued her and her publisher, Penguin UK, for libel. Under English law, the burden of proof in a libel case rests with the defendant. The core of the book is the trial itself, combining a page-turning eyewitness account and a close look at the mind-set and dubious research methods of a neo-Nazi. Irving served as his own lawyer and constantly courted press coverage. Among his assertions: Hitler did not order the Kristallnacht violence but attempted to stop it; the Allies were responsible for typhus epidemics in the concentration camps; Anne Frank's diary is a romantic novel; more people died in Ted Kennedy's car at Chappaquidick than in the gas chambers at Auschwitz. Ultimately, Irving's case collapsed under the weight of evidence and expert testimony provided by the defense. Emotions run high when the subject of the Holocaust comes up for discussion, yet reviewers approached Lipstadt’s account with even, critical, and generally positive eyes. Many gave the author credit for presenting a multifaceted case in a riveting, highly readable manner—her spin differs from books written by those who testified on her behalf—Richard J. Evans’s Lying About Hitler (2001) and Robert Jan van Pelt’s The Case for Auschwitz (2002)—and one journalist’s account—D.D. Guttenplan’s The Holocaust on Trial (2001). A few critics, however, found the narrative slowed by excessive detail, and noted that the book suffers from a few dry patches. In terms of tone, opinions ranged from "a little self-righteous" (Baltimore Sun) to "never loses its suspense, readability or momentum. Or humor" (Salon.com). Despite these disparate comments, all critics agreed that Lipstadt’s story is a fascinating one and an important historical lesson for the record.

A well documented and argued thesis about the Holocaust deniers.

This book, well written and documented, is directed towards those that believe the civilized world must fight Holocaust deniers as long as those creeps are alive. Obviously, when some of them die others are born - because they represent an important segment of modern Christian anti-Semitism.

David Irving must feel very lonely and frustrated since his ideas are rejected by one and all for being so depressingly absurd and idiotic. I suspect that once he is six feet under, his family, whatever will be left of it, will always avoid mentioning his name, ashamed as being identified with his demented ideas and position. As we all know, liars, especially the hateful variety, are always forgotten. History's garbage bin is full of them.

Personally, I prefer to focus on the present and the future. And the future of the Jewish people lies with the State of Israel - armed to the teeth and ready to strike at any anti-Semite wherever he might hide in fear of the New Jew.

To all those that plan to buy this book, a message: Learn from history so that it will never repeat itself because of our ignorance.

Birdseye View of British Defamation Trial on subject of the Holocaust and Historical Truth

Don't want to duplicate what other positive reviews have said. I found this book compelling due to (1) the subject matter - the blatant invention and perpetuation of lies about the Holocaust and other historic events; (2) the description of how the British legal system works in a civil defamation case; and (3) because I am a trial lawyer, the insight into how our courtroom judgments and tactics can seem incomprehensible to even the brightest of clients.

Not the finest piece of non-fiction writing, but kept my attention and I read it in about a day.

A question I am left with... Holocaust deniers, like David Irving (who is the subject of this book), seemingly greatly admire Hitler and also despise Jews and other non-Aryan types. Given their antisemitism, why do they try to claim Hitler wasn't behind the Final Solution and/or that there was no Final Solution? Why don't they embrace the final solution along with Hitler? It doesn't make sense to me.

Holocaust denial is a real threat to history and, I think, is a first step in the re-emergence of Fascism. Telling the "Big Lie" is nothing new as a propaganda tactic employed by those with a secret agenda. Holocaust deniers have just such an agenda. Dr. Lipstadt is a courageous defender of truth who was willing to point to out that the emperor really has no clothes, at great personal and professional risk in a foreign civil court system that makes it the responsibility of the defendant to prove truth rather than the plaintiff to prove falsehood. I applaud Dr. Lipstadt and her legal team for maintaining courage and resolve in the face of legal pressures to settle out of court.

Getting It On Paper

When I was only a little younger, but far less experienced with digital imaging, I once said (somewhat facetiously) that in an ideal world all one should need to print an image well was the printer manufacturer's instruction manual. I am a little older and a great deal more experienced and I now know printing images is no joking matter. Luckily I can turn to Jeff Schewe now for printing help.

This book is a companion to his book The Digital Negative: Raw Image Processing in Lightroom, Camera Raw, and Photoshop. In it Schewe covers almost everything one needs to know about printing. He does it for both Photoshop and Lightroom without confusing the separate procedures, and for both color and black and white. He does not have much faith in printers other than Epson and Canon for fine arts printing, so HP and other printer owners will be disappointed. After a brief history of image printing and printers, he launches into a discussion of color management, which is the adjustment of images from camera or scanner to monitor to print so that colors appear consistent. Although he sometimes provides really detailed procedures that many folks might skip if they are not obsessive about their prints, he is also realistic, as when he opines that one really only needs to profile one's camera for a few conditions. Next he describes how to prepare an image for printing, briefly touching on tone and color adjustments and spending more time on sharpening and noise reduction. He shows how to soft proof an image to adjust it fit the qualities of the paper being printed. He then shows the actual procedures for sending the image to print. Schewe's discussion of print attributes includes paper, presentation, and storage. He finally talks about printing workflow and compares Photoshop and Lightroom. He includes preparing images for printing by a lab and use of a "RIP".

The book is profusely illustrated. Some screen captures are difficult to distinguish because of small size, but I'm not certain how to avoid this.

Schewe is quick to say that paper selection is subjective, but indicates that the comparison between images in soft proofing may help with the selection. He also discusses when either matte papers or glossy papers may be more appropriate.

Occasionally, I would have liked to have seen a little more detailed instruction on things, like getting a camera profile into Lightroom, but I do know that folks like X-rite do provide detailed instructions with their Color Checker

Even though I've been printing for a long time, I still picked up several tips and improvements in my own workflow. A beginner might be a bit overwhelmed by the depth of instruction, and a general book about either Lightroom or Photoshop may be more helpful. However, once a photographer has a little experience in printing, and feels some of the dissatisfactions, small or large, that most of us have with our prints, this book will prove quite worthwhile. It is certainly one of the best I've read on the subject. Schewe can certainly help make one's images match one's visions.

Jeff Schewe is the New Printing Explainer-in-Chief

A print is a thing of great beauty. A great print is that completed long pass down the football field at the end of a very exciting Super Bowl. You have captured that fabulous image, which it feels as if it took your entire career to capture. It looks terrific on your screen but it's just not translating to the paper.

One of the many areas we are called upon for our consulting expertise is printing. It frustrates many serious photo enthusiasts as well as some of the industry's top professionals. We admit to being frustrated by the process, ourselves. What's maybe even more frustrating is that being able to make that translation from the display screen to the paper is the scarcity of information on professional printing techniques.

The reviews we publish are our own journals. They serve as our reference notes. We want to be up front about disclosing that we travel in many of the same circles as the author, Jeff Schewe. We have never met nor even conversed, but he shares comments on product developments in a private professional online forum we frequent.

CH 1 - A DIGITAL PRINTING PRIMER - We strongly believe that it's not possible to know where you are going unless you understand what has come before you got involved. Jeff opens with an excellent review of the history of inkjet printing. For those who have not lived it, this sets the stage. Don't skip it. This is a fun read with some celebrity storytelling.

CH 2 - COLOR MANAGEMENT - Understanding color requires you to digest a fair amount of physics classes but this is far more exciting than we remember from high school. This is where too many books skimp and the complete story is never told. This chapter alone is worth the purchase price. At this point in our reading, we could confirm that this book earned a place on our reference shelves. It's a must-have, covering color theory placed in practical Applications. At this point, we're only 77 pages into this. If color models and color gamuts seem like something you'd never understand and you were ready to give up, the second chapter feels very inspirational.

CH 3 - PREPARING IMAGES FOR PRINTING - If you've been printing in Photoshop (Ps), and if you have not explored some of the Lightroom (Lr) printing features, it's something you owe yourself. What you learn here is our favorite thing about Lr, soft proofing. If you've been working in both, you'll appreciate Jeff's fresh approach. There's nothing here which made us think, "I don't need to read this." (And, we go back to Ps 2.0 and Lr 1.0.) Admittedly, the third chapter has some "I've never done that," moments for us to the point where we began to think, "I've gotta to that." Even if you're a known print master, you're about to up your mastery.

CH 4 - MAKING THE PRINT - Our second book has a chapter on printing. We tried to make it as interesting and visually appealing as possible. If we ever owned the crown, as Printing Explainer-in-Chief, we're passing it to Jeff, maybe with a tinge of jealousy for a job so well done that everyone who writes, presents, and consults should consider the bar raised and the new standard set.

CH 5 - ATTRIBUTES OF A PERFECT PRINT - We didn't give Jeff a penny to say this, but he opens the chapter with one of our ongoing mantras, "Start with a great image." In the previous four chapters he has set the table for the printing feast, but if the raw ingredients are not that good, the celebration will fizzle out. Nevertheless, many a print processing house will be asked to do great things with less than A+ images going to the output specifications the customer is providing. This would have been an incomplete volume if Jeff had not addressed what may result in something less than perfect, and he didn't disappoint. He even has a sidebar on signing prints, an issue we have pondered in the Past. And, of course it would not be the reference work readers need unless he also explored framing and print preservation, which he has done well.

CH 6 - DEVELOPING A PRINTING WORKFLOW - It might not occur to those readers, who are making a few great prints a month, that some of us have a daily workflow. It's not all printing. There are others who may be shooting, throughout the week, and need to schedule Bridge editing, Camera Raw processing, and Photoshop post-production into the week's schedule, along with print output. Along with a few topics, which didn't fit well into other sections of the book, this final chapter is an excellent reality check. The reader is forced to consider the time resources which must be devoted to great printing. Rather than frightening you, it ought to serve as an encouragement toward both efficiency and excellence.

CONCLUSION - Can you learn about making beauty prints from a visually boring book? It would be a struggle for us, but that's just a guess, because this one is inspirational in its graphics and design. More over, there isn't a better book on ink jet printing that we know of. It's extremely complete.

Of all the books we've reviewed, loved, and refer to often, we don't remember an easier one to give our whole-hearted 5 stars to.

Jeff does it again

Again, in the spirit of Ansel Adams master series, Jeff has captured the necessary steps to take a digital "negative" and transform it into a print. He covers the process completely, except for one area: making, ordering and using custom profiles. While he does discuss them, I feel like he could go a little deeper into the topic. Other than that, this is the guide to printing we've all been waiting for.

About the Author
We have managed to find the ideal author for this new book, Chris Gibbs, a 42-year-old semiretired web designer and vice secretary, newsletter editor and technical adviser of the Locost Car Club. He has impeccable credentials for the job in hand, as he built his own Locost between 1997 and 1999 and has access to a tremendous database of Locost information through the Locost Car Club, which he currently runs in his spare time. He is currently working on a self-designed single-seater track-day car in the style of a 1960s F1 car, with Sierra running gear and a Honda Fireblade motorcycle engine.

Best DIY Car Instruction Book So Far

Chris Gibbs has taken the 'Locost' concept a step further. As this new book has CAD drawings (I believe done on Solidworks), it probably does not have any dimension errors that crept into the Ron Champion book. The book takes you through drawings and instructions so you can end up with a Ford Sierra (Merkur) based roadster. All you need are tools, patience, time, money and a lot of hard work. The single donor vehicle concept helps but only if the abovementioned vehicle is available (and affordable!) in your country. However, with some ingenuity and help from other builders online, you may be able to come up with something good. If you have questions there's even an official Haynes Roadster Forum to help you! Author Chris Gibbs participates in this official Haynes forum and posts updates to the book, corrections (yes even this book needs a few), advice and guidance.

Ron champion still the champion

I own all the previous editions of this book. This has been the least usefull unless you really do have the donor car used in it. I recommend the Ron champion book instead because it gives more latitude to adapt many old cars instead of one single rear suspension from a European ford. If this will be the first book of this type that you will purchase then I would recommend it. Those with experience and access to the internet would be better off with Ron champions book.

NOT the new locost reference

I was really expecting this book to bring a much needed update on Ron Champion's book but it's more of the same. The donor is still UK only and even there, it's getting hard to find. The drawings have dimensional errors like Champion's book. The design of the chassis is still lacking because it still does not incorporate some triangulations (Aussie mods) that are known to improve rigidity. A lot of the new designs shown in the book are overly complex (the pedal box is a good example). Finally, it still leaves a bunch of details out. I would recommend people to stay with Champion's book for inspiration and complement with Tanner's book or join a forum.

Missing in action: the ability to access online supplementary material

The book itself is excellent. What is less so is the promised access to the relevant website in order to access online material. The key supplied with the sealed text simply did not work and one seems to get the run around in seeking redress from the publishers. However, this should not be allowed to mar the content of the hard copy material which certainly supplements in a meaningful way some of the existing literature.
