An essential "Bible" for Myco-Mythologists

Allegro's book was one of the original, how should I say, books of the entheogenic Pentateuch. You simply cannot become learned in this matter without reading this book. That being said, BE WARNED. To say Allegro is "phallocentric" would be a vast understatement, for hardly a page gets turned without the mention of a penis. When we say that someone's work is "remarkable", we don't necessarily mean it is *worthy of remark. It may simply be titillating and scandalous. Nonetheless, if only 60% of Allegro's suppositions are correct, then this book is an amazing window into the ancient world of the mushroom sacrament. Yes, Mr. Allegro, psilocybin (especially cubensis) mushrooms can resemble a penis. Yes, there are undoubtedly thousands of references in antiquity to the mushroom as a penis. But Allegro becomes so fixated on the issue he may as well have called his book "The Sacred Mushroom and the Penis". What we wanted from him was a window into the Dead Sea Scrolls. After all, he was giving interviews essentially saying 'yes, I was on the team deciphering these 972 texts and here are the precise verses which I think refer to the use of drugs among the ancient Jews, the more modern Christians, and the Essenes who seem to have acted as a bridge between them'. But he didn't to that. The title alone is false advertising, but so what?

Allegro is into etymology and philology and Derrida himself would be amazed at the deconstructions he posits. Allegro is also what I call an "armchair Sumerologist" much like Zechariah Sitchin was: a self-taught expert on the Sumerian lexicon. Wasson berates him for his lack of credentials on the subject, but in the mid 50's to the mid 60's, when Allegro was composing this book, where could one obtain such credentials? As Sitchin himself once said: when he was writing "The 12th Planet" where may have been all of 20 people in the world that even knew how to read Sumerian, so Wasson can just go bite a big phallic-mushroom (which I'm sure he did many times) and cut Allegro some slack. Yes, some of his "word-brick" conjecture is spurious and some is partially (and partically) credible, but other examples he gives are like Babe Ruth knocking a home-run out of the park.

None of this changes the fact that this book is a MUST-READ. You need it on your shelf. Forever. End of story. So go buy it already!

This has all 48 Feeling etudes for sax or oboe in a solid, well published book. It also comes with some duets/trips for oboes or saxophones. However this is the "1st oboe" or "1st sax" part so if you want to play the duets with others, they have to have the other part to play it. The paper inside the copy is the same kind that this publisher used for all its big book scores: its a bit dark and thin, but pencil writes well on it. A good purchase. Every serious sax player should study these etudes.

This is an older book and will probably be slightly behind the times with the biology, but the pictures (TEM) are all damn fine quality. The images will never become out of date.

Gracias a Lonely Planet

Lonely Planet's Cuba Travel Guide was wonderful. The two guys who wrote this guide and their adventurous Cuban driver were outstanding. There were two books about Cuba that were invaluable to me in traveling and trying to understand a little about this fascinating country. One was Julia Zweig's book, "What everyone should know about Cuba" and Lonely Planet. Two examples: Lonely Planet's description of Cuba as "A Prince in Tattered Clothing" couldn't have been more accurate. But what I found both amusing and impressive was the accurate detail about this quickly changing country. There is a hotel in Cienfuegos that Lonely Planet mentioned that had tennis courts but no fence to stop the balls from rolling away as far as their momentum would take them. We went to the hotel and saw the two tennis courts which had no fences to stop the tennis balls exactly as described in Lonely Planet. What a useful guide. ��Gracias a Lonely Planet!!! Good but somewhat lacking in detailed historical information about places and buildings (including hotels). Okay map but could use more and larger foldout maps. Changes are occurring rapidly and outrunning any annual publication.

Initially before I left I was pretty happy with this book

Initially before I left I was pretty happy with this book, however when put into practice it was useless. Simple information was missing, for example, under "Money Matters" it would have been nice to know that only Visa cards can be used in ATMs, but if you only have a mastercard you can get money out in a bank. This is not new and pretty important information.

A must have guide for Miami travel

I've been an Amazon shopper for nearly a decade and I have never before written a review. This book has compelled me to on a fundamental level.

Let's start with the photographs. The tasteful exuberance of his images portray Miami in a light that perfectly captures her essence. The photos alone are worthy of a 5 star review.

The written word is what puts this book into the stratosphere and immediately bring to mind the phrase "must have". Streisand's words not only convey exactly what you would imagine the hidden jewel's of the south to be, but also he has you laughing along the journey too with helpful anecdotes of his own experience.

I could not recommend this book more. A stocking stuffer? Perhaps. An absolute necessity for any smart traveler? Without a doubt.

Not Good On Kindle - Don't buy the Kindle version!

First the book is fine, the content is fine. - My objection is for the Kindle version of this book. I'm really trying to like the kindle versions of books. (I have Kindle for Mac) They just aren't working out for me. This book is filled with PICTURES of hand written TEXT - that means you can not zoom in on the kindle version and you can't see what the hand writing says.

An example of what I'm talking about can be seen if you go to the "Look Inside" section for this book and look at the hand writing on the page with the pelican heads or on the page with the leaf and rocks. Then hit the zoom out button on the browser ONE time. On my Kindle that is how small the print is. If you can read those lines the book will probably work for you. Remember you can't zoom in or out of pictures on the Kindle.

Also, just in case someone working for Amazon reads this - Seriously! it would be so easy for you guys to allow the computer to read text to speech. I drive 1.5 hours a day. It would be great to listen to my Kindle library in the car. I would buy A LOT more books and magazines through Kindle if I could do that. As it is I have only bought 3 and been frustrated with each of them.

i did like this book, or the other one form the same author "Painting with Watercolor, Pen & Ink", each taken separately. However I feel a little cheated as I bought both books, and it turns out 8 out of the 11 chapters that this book contains are the same. what i mean by the same: word per word. so in a sense I paid almost $23 for three chapters...

Luke Riley is lost. His mother's recent death has set Luke and his family adrift. When Luke decides to get the Bloodhound from Willajean, a dog breeder who owns Storm Watcher Kennel, he works out a deal to help at her kennel in exchange for the expensive dog. Thrilled to have a summer with a purpose, Luke befriends Willajean's daughter, Megan and together they plan how Luke can get a Papillon puppy instead of a Bloodhound. But nothing seems to work as they struggle with stubborn fathers, summer storms, unhelpful siblings, and hidden guilt. Can one little white dog really save both families?

for teens

I was not the target audience for this book, but because it was by Maria Snyder, I bought it. It is about a 13 year old boy and his family. There is no magic here, just kids, adults, and dogs. It expresses very well the frustration of being a teen. There is adventure, love, conflict, and fun. I recommend it to teens and adults who enjoy YA fiction.

A great read!

I wasn’t sure what to expect from the synopsis. I knew it was written by one of my favorite writers, Maria V. Snyder. (If you haven’t checked out her Healer series, my personal favorite, then you should run out and grab them now!) I knew it was middle grade, and it was about dogs and the weather. It turned out to be so much more.

Having just lost his mother, Luke and his brothers live with their father who is a famous Search and Rescue leader. There’s a lot of family dynamics that are brewing just under the surface. Whether that’s Luke struggling with his own guilt and demons, or his interactions with his bullying brothers, or even his thin relationship with his father, the is a lot of emotion going on in this book. Luke blames himself for his mother’s death and is sure that his family blames him too. That’s certainly a lot to place on a young kid, who has no friends and a large anxiety towards thunderstorms.

But Snyder handles gentle Luke’s character gracefully, allowing his insecurities and flaws to shine through. The family’s grief is dark cloud, floating in and out of the atmosphere of the tale, making the family and their challenges very real to me. I wanted to slap awake Dad and tell his brothers to shut up. And that’s the beauty of the story. It resonated with me because the characters are so real, their motivations so clearly sprung from their loss.

The secondary characters are fun and full of life. The story brought me in and held me there, my heart cracking slowly for Luke and warming for the dogs. I am a dog person. Yes, I have rabbits. But I am a dog person. Snyder brings all of the sweet dogs to the forefront, loyal heroes who add yet another layer of warmth to this world.

I really enjoyed Storm Watcher, reading it in two nights as soon as I got home from work. It’s a satisfying book about family, love and grief.

I'm so excited to have found another book I think my reluctant reader middle grade son will like. Luke is a likable character, and I cared about him. The emotions were authentic without getting too mushy. The dogs, search-and-rescue missions, and weather tower add interest. I thoroughly enjoyed the story.

The past is reborn!

Being a Rajput whose father is from the Jaipur dynasty, I was very impressed with this book. Like the latest book (please refer to "Maharaj's Jewels"), I found this book very ornate with beautiful pictures and rich historical details. The book is full of facts and intersting tidbits a reader will find facinating. Like all table top books, this one will add integrity to one's collection...
