Failed Prodigy or Failed Society--A Tale of Genius Incarnate

I read this book shortly after its initial appearance, and have cited it repeatedly to friends and colleagues as a must read. A terrific popular level book by an author of wide interests (in the day) which explores the human condition at so many levels. Here was the prototypical genius, those infrequently occurring persons born with abilities that suggest the distant future of human evolution for the rest of us, living in our world, and trying to cope with the curiosity of the masses. Born to psychiatrist parents, the best and brightest of his day, who were friends with William James, psychologist/philosopher, one would have expected a blazingly brilliant career. And indeed one started out that way, but the incomprehensibility of those around him, even those of great capacity in his world, created a mental gauntlet of terrible stress that eventually drove him into self-exile and obscurity. A wasted mind in a way, and a telling indictment against humanity's capacity to affirm rather than fear great ability. And what I love most is the author's ability to portray Sidis' sense of wonder and playful desire to be of service that pervaded much of his work. It just adds to the bitter sweet encounter you will find in the life story of William James Sidis. After reading it you may want to visit his archives at sidis.net. As with most geniuses, he was way ahead of his time, and made some interesting predictions.

I came across this book while I was studying Montessori. Many of the methods that Sidis' parents applied were the same that Montessori discovered. Today, a Montessori education costs thousands. Sidis' parents were poor. It shows what determination and ideas can achieve. Prior to finding this Book, I also discovered Sidis on Wikipedia and thought he was fascinating but misunderstood and abused by hyperbole from the media. Although I have just started reading this Book, it is fascinating, a perfect book for anyone who is considering Montessori's `way of life'.

Stan Lee, the cocreator of pop cultural icons like Spider-Man, the Hulk and the X-Men, has long been the subject of debate within the comics community, and Raphael and Spurgeon aim to set the record straight in this well-researched and entertaining book. In the late 1960s, Lee elevated himself into the public eye as the face of Marvel Comics, adopting a colorful persona along the way. Left behind were his c-creators, artists Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, who never received the credit they deserved. At age 17, in 19TK, Lee (n‚ Stanley Lieber) took a job as an all-purpose assistant at his cousin Martin Goodman's comic book company, Timely. A frustrated novelist, Lee remained at Timely, shielded by Goodman from the industry's mid-century tumults, and eventually he transformed the company into Marvel Comics, steering it and himself into pop culture history. The authors portray Lee as a constantly enthusiastic, slightly daffy figure who turned a Depression-era work ethic and real bursts of creativity into something special. For all of his faults, the authors give Lee proper credit for being a fast and exciting creator who gave superheroes real-world problems and anxieties and used this realism for its maximum potential. Raphael and Spurgeon also chronicle Lee's decades in the wilderness of Hollywood, trying and failing to get decent films made from Marvel properties. Writer Raphael and cartoonist Spurgeon have put together a solid narrative well interwoven with the history of comics. Adult/High School-Raphael and Spurgeon march readers through Lee's first 80 years, taking many compelling byroads along the way to observe the history of American comic-book development, distribution, and readership. Lee created a dynamic and somewhat charismatic persona for himself early in life, and was able to move from technical grunt work to a certain level of co-creativity with more sophisticated artists, and from errand boy to publisher to media mogul. He is, indeed, a part of popular culture with high name recognition. The authors use a variety of resources, including interviews with field specialists and unpublished writings, to substantiate their views of both the man and the medium's evolution. While there are source notes for each chapter, they appear in alphabetical order, making it impossible to find the specific reference to which some controversial declarations are attributed. This will frustrate those doing higher-level research but won't impede casual readers' enjoyment of a colorful man's story told through well-described vignettes.

Stan Lee is probably the world's most visible comic-book creator, though he has retired from comics writing. His career in the industry dates from 1940, but he toiled anonymously until vitalizing the field in the early 1960s with Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, and the other, groundbreaking Marvel Comics superheroes. As Marvel's line grew, Lee turned to overseeing the expanding roster of titles and was gradually eased into being company figurehead, traveling the country to shill for the firm. Recently his reputation has been tarnished by accusations that he tried to hog credit for creating Marvel's iconic characters by minimizing the contributions of the artists who worked with him. This well-researched biography usefully corrects Lee's self-serving memoir Excelsior! (2002) and also serves as a critical history of Marvel Comics as well as an overview of the rise and fall of the entire comics industry, now at a commercial nadir, selling a fraction of the number of copies it once did and existing largely, it seems, to develop fodder for blockbuster movies. Stan is his own man, and has taken lumps to prove it.

In comicdom, there are a few creators (Stan Lee, Jim Shooter, various editors at DC Comics, et al) who are seen as bad guys for one reason or another.

Here we have what I think is a balanced account of Stan Lee, who has been seen as everything as a genius to a thief to a visionary to a hack.

Did Stan lie about his creator status of the Marvel Universe. Yes. Did he overstate his role in the creation of Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Doctor Doom, etc.? Yes, and he has sometimes stated as much (with an uncomfortable squirm, I bet).

Is he a bad guy for doing so? Well....if honest is the best policy, Stan is one for bad policies, I guess.

Love him or hate him, he IS one of the great figures in comic books and it is easily argued that without Stan Lee's contributions, comic books would not have been the social force and just plain fun that they were in the 1960's and certainly Marvel would not be, to this day, on top of the heap of comic book companies.

This book is well-written and holds back only in the slightest. Stan gets the black eye he deserves. But he also gets the pat on the back he deserves, too.

I'll now go on to read his own "Excellsior" with one eye on this book to remind me of the hype that Stan is famous for pulling.

This is a fast read and very entertaining. It offers super pictures (which Ronin Ro's biography of Jack Kirby sadly lacks) of Stan at various stages of his life. ALL Marvel fans and fans of the Silver Age of comics should read it!

Factually this jives with the other books about Marvel's history (except the ones written by Stan himself). A great bit of nostalgia mixed in with some myth-busting revelations. Nothing terribly new here, but a poignant and bittersweet summary of Stan Lee's career up to about 2003-2004.

The Best is in the Basics

This book is a constant source of reference. My copy is so dog-eared I recently purchased a new one. Why Sunset hasn't reprinted it is beyond me. I have yet to find a bad recipe in it. The other night my kids wanted oatmeal cookies. My first thought was my Sunset book. They came out perfect. These recipes are all benchmarks for what the dish should taste like. This book is the basis for cooking. It is the foundation for a great many recipes.

I have just spent over an hour going in circles with Sunset Publishing regarding getting this cookbook back into print. My frustration levels remained low because of the necessity of this mission, and the need to not be robbed at paying $336 for another copy of this book, not to mention the other prices sellers are getting for a used copy of this book. Each customer service rep was floored when I told them what this book was going for through 3rd party sellers here on Amazon, and the prices for this book from other sellers such as Alibris. Bottom line, I finally got a name and phone number of a person in marketing. Please, please, please, scream loud and clear that you want the hard cover edition of this book back in print. I have tried to convince them that I would purchase at least 20 plus copies for all the people I have wanted to share this gem with over the years, in addition to replacing my worn out copy. I will be happy to share the contact information with you if you are interested in the mission of getting this gem of a cookbook back into print. If try to contact them on your own it would be Oxmoor Publishing located in Alabama. Let them know you want the book in the original form, with the original recipes, etc. I have over 200 cookbooks in my library and this is my go to, or starting place for cooking anything. We can't let future generations go without the basic knowledge and techniques when it comes to knowing how to cook, in this day and age of boxed and pre-cooked foods. I had this cookbook even before I was married, I knew how to cook but this cookbook helped make me an exceptional cook; I now have children who are adults and desperately need a copy of their own, not to mention their friends, my friends, relatives, co-workers, wedding gifts, birthday gifts and a hostess gift for someone who is just starting out. I am smarter this time and will also stockpile some copies to last me well into my twilight years. Scream loud and clear, not on here, but to the publisher that you DEMAND this book be brought back into print. It's a win win situation for both us and them, after all they are in the business to make money; and this book would sell!

Great No-fail recipes

I was given this book approx. 25 years ago and haven't experienced any failures. I still refer to it for some basic recipes.
Not being able to find it locally, I ordered it from Amazon for my son who has left home.
It would have to be the best all-rounder cookbook with great recipes for each area of cooking you want to explore.
It has very clear instructions using easily accessible ingredients.

For Badiou love is a thought not a feeling, providing a perspective previously explored by Scott Peck in "The Road Less Traveled". He decries internet dating as safe love and reminds us that love sees the difference in people and embraces them. With love seemingly lost in our world, reading this book is a worthwhile reminder that we must will ourselves to love.

About the Author
David Knudson is founder and executive director of The National Historical Route 66 Federation (www.nationalroute66.org), which works to preserve and promote the road. Knudson founded the Federation in 1994 after completing a trip across the country, during which he was unable to locate old section of Route 66. The National Histoic Route 66 Federation is a worldwide, nonprofit organization dedicated to directing the public's attention to the importance of US Highway Route 66 in America's cultural heritage and acquiring the federal, state and private support necessary to preserve the historic landmarks and revitalize he economies of communities along the entire 2400-mile stretch of road. Knudson and the Federation were instrumental in getting Congress to pass the Route 66 Corridor Preservation Act in 1999. Formerly a partner with the Los Angeles-based advertising firm of Walker, Knudson and Campbell, Knudson also serves on the advisory council of the National Park Service's Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program.

I liked the book very much

Having grown up near Route 66 in Southwest Missouri, I have many fond memories traveling it. As it was the route we took every Saturday into "town" for shopping or that night to the movies, it was an important road. The most vivid memory was our families first and only vacation trip in the 1950s through the entire western half of the U.S. in our new 1953 Chevrolet. Reading this book brought back a lot of memories, plus new information that I did not know when I was a teenager, and how important the highway was to America. I have driven tens of thousand miles on it in my lifetime and some of it still exists near our family farm. I liked the book very much, and if one lets their mind go back to days gone by, it will bring warm memories I am sure.

Easy to read overview of Route 66, providing history, the roads demise, and recovery as a tourist attraction. Definitely makes me want to take time to explore this historic highway! Has interesting pictures, but would benefit from having more maps.

Excerpts from I Love You, But I'm Not in Love with You

THE COUPLES

Five years ago, the occasional couple would present themselves at my therapy office after one partner had confessed, 'I love you, but I'm not in love with you.' To start off, I was surprised. The phrase seemed to belong to a character in a smart New York TV sitcom. Yet real people were using it to describe something profound that was happening to their relationship. But how could someone love but not be in love? These couples would describe each other as best friends or that their relationship was more like a brother and sister, except most were still having sex. In essence, the partnership had become defined by companionship rather than passion―and that was no longer enough.

COUPLE #1

Nick is, a forty-two-year-old sales manager, and Anna, a thirty-nine-year-old teacher. They had been married for fifteen years and despite some difficult patches, like Nick's layoff, their relationship had flourished.

So when Nick dropped the, 'I love you, but' bombshell, Anna was devastated: 'I thought we had a happy relationship, I really did. Not perfect, of course, but then who can claim that? I've tried to get him to explain why he doesn't love me anymore, but he keeps saying he doesn't know. The best he has managed is that I don't listen. Except, he's never told me before he was unhappy.'

Nick explained that the feeling had been building for several years and that he needed to tell their two teenage children and have a trial separation. 'He has no honor, no loyalty,' Anna complained. 'He is completely selfish. I feel he's leaving me for someone he hasn't even met yet.'

COUPLE #2

Michael and Elizabeth are both in their late thirties and have been together since their late teens. 'I no longer feel I'm special to Elizabeth ,' complained Michael. 'I know we have responsibilities, but we used to be everything to each other. Now I seem to come way down on the list. I might joke that I come after the kids' guinea pigs, but it's not really very funny.'

Michael had been feeling like this for several years and had withdrawn into himself. At first, Elizabeth thought there might have been someone else, but finally, Michael confessed that he loved her but was no longer in love and was considering leaving. 'We're not a couple of kids sharing french fries in a bus shelter anymore,' she moaned. 'It can't be how it used to be. Just think of all the things I do for you―cooking, cleaning, ironing. Do you think I feel special every day? Life isn't like that.' Michael and Elizabeth were both talking about love but had very different definitions.

With no agreement about what constitutes love, their conversations went around in circles. ILYB is especially frustrating when there is much to celebrate in the relationship.

ILYB

Irene is sixty-one and has been with her husband for over thirty-five years. She lives in Toronto , Ontario , and is one of the respondents to a questionnaire I circulated throughout North America .

'We are good friends and have wonderful conversations about everything, but I can't pretend that I wouldn't be happier if the passionate and affectionate sides of myself could be expressed and received,' writes Irene. 'But I no longer know how to deal with that. I try to show my love in other ways, but the truth is, at times I still feel bereft.' With most problems, when someone has the courage to admit everything, he or she expects to be greeted with sympathy and understanding.

Sadly, people who have fallen out of love are often told just to try harder. Naomi is thirty-four and comes from New Jersey : 'My soul is lost, and I am almost emotionally dead. I confided in my mother, but she just reminded me that I have a wonderful husband who loves his children.

She's right. But I just cannot let love into my heart. I want it so badly but just don't know what to do.' Instead of feeling supported, Naomi feels more alone than ever before and is no further forward in finding a solution. Almost every popular song is about love, as are half of all novels and films; we read about it or see it on TV every day. Surely, we should understand love and, at the very least, be able to define it. But this is where the confusion starts. We can love our mothers, our children, and our friends―even chocolate.

When it comes to our partners, love can describe both the crazy, heady days at the beginning of a relationship and ten years later, taking his or her hand, squeezing it, and feeling sure of each other. Can one little word really cover so many different emotions? Dictionaries are not much help. They list almost two dozen synonyms―including affection, fondness, caring, liking, concern, attraction, desire, and infatuation, and we all instinctively agree there is a huge gap between 'liking' and complete 'infatuation.' The problem is that we have one word for three very different emotions: the early days/honeymoon passion; the day-to-day intimacy with a long-term partner; and the protective instinct for a child or bond with a parent. To clarify the differences between these three types, we need a new vocabulary, partly to remove the confusion between two partners with different takes―like Elizabeth and Michael―but mainly because by naming and explaining the differences, we will understand love better.

Well Written with Great Advice

Written very well, in easy concise language, with many real life examples. The 5 Kinds of Love Languages, was the most surprising - it turns out that my significant other and I were communicating our love to each other in the wrong "language." Couples should read this book at the first signs of tension in their relationship - don't wait until those infamous words are used: "I love you, but I'm not in love with you."

A hard book for me to read

This is a hard book to read. My wife left, and, just as is very clearly explained in the book, me, the man, didn't have a clue. I found this book because the title is the exact phrase that she used as she walked out. Now, my life is dedicated to being a person that can she can be in love with again.
But, the book is hard. I am in there. I can't say how many times I was reading and simply had to put the book down until the tears stopped. It was me I was reading about, and I simply never knew what I had been doing, and even more, not doing.
I hope I haven't learned too late.

Wonderful book

This book was great, very helpful, applicable, and easy to read. I love the explanations, examples, and exercises. I recommend it for all couples, but especially those feeling like they're missing something or getting bored over time.
