Too many storylines for one book.

I'm a big fan of Evangeline Anderson but.. this book really requires the reader to suspend reality.. The Cyborg series is easier to believe. I also found that the issues of hazing, harassment and suicidal behavior weren't handled very well. It's hard to accept that these things were all taking place and no one. including our protagonists, was taking any action. A bit too much was thrown into the story. None of the plotlines were fully satisfied. The college pledge slave, the closeted man still in love with his college frat brother, the secret werewolf; any of these plotlines would be enough for one book. Instead, we get a little bit of each.
I'm a fan of m/m romances and I am not sorry I read this one but I cannot really recommend it either. That said, I'm sure I'll buy the next release from this author.

Good. But not great.

The other reviewer is right, the werewolf plot line comes out of nowhere and doesn't serve much of a purpose nor does it add too much to the storyline. This was a college fraternity storyline and that was why I read it. All of their drama would have been better served being filtered through that lens imo. The sex scenes are kind of hot but quite repetitive. Marie Sexton is slightly more graphic. I thought this was a sweet story and I liked it but I am not entirely sure I would recommend it unless one is looking for a college/pledge slave book. The concept was good, I suppose I just wish it had been a bit deeper. Great beginning though. Very well written and sucked me right in.

Not as good as that other book she wrote . .

This short novel started out so well. The way the two main characters are thrown together against their wills, but not against their desires, sets the story off to an entertaining start. I thought, "I am going to really enjoy this!". The were-wolf sub-plot didn't really work for me, however, and detracted from the chemistry otherwise developed. If you want to sample Evangeline Anderson's homoerotic fiction, I recommend "Broken Boundaries" as a far more enjoyable book. That is one hell of an arousingly and amusingly enjoyable story!

Simpson was perhaps the most influential paleontologist of the twentieth century, and a major participant in the modern evolutionary synthesis, contributing Tempo and mode in evolution (1944), The meaning of evolution (1949) and The major features of evolution (1953). He was an expert on extinct mammals and their intercontinental migrations. He anticipated such concepts as punctuated equilibrium (in Tempo and mode) and dispelled the myth that the evolution of the horse was a linear process culminating in the modern Equus caballus. He coined the word hypodigm in 1940, and published extensively on the taxonomy of fossil and extant mammals. Simpson was influentially, and incorrectly, opposed to Alfred Wegener's theory of continental drift. He was Professor of Zoology at Columbia University, and Curator of the Department of Geology and Paleontology at the American Museum of Natural History from 1945 to 1959. He was Curator of the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University from 1959 to 1970, and a Professor of Geosciences at the University of Arizona until his retirement in 1982.

A must read for evolutionary ecologists

I read a number of papers and books while studying for my qualifying exam and this was my favourite by a long shot. Simpson writes in an informative yet entertaining manner and many of his ideas (such as those about adaptive zones) are still informative today. A great synthesis of a broad subject by a writer well versed in ecology, evolution, and palaeontology. If you want a good feeling for "state of the art" then and now, read this book, then read Schluter's The Ecology of Adaptive Radiation.

ANOTHER IMPORTANT EVOLUTIONARY THEORY BOOK BY G.G. SIMPSON

George Gaylord Simpson (1902-1984) was one of the most influential American paleontologists of the twentieth century. This is one of his most significant theoretical works.

He notes that "The rate of evolution of any character or combination of characters may change markedly at any time in phyletic evolution, even though the direction of evolution remain the same."

Acknowledging that there are `quite rigid limitations on what a mutation can accomplish," he notes that seemingly major changes in Drosophila fruit flies "does not produce new structures, wings ... but only produces the wings characteristic of the system in an additional place." He also admits candidly that "Where relatively large mutations are concerned, they usually do not persist or do not come to characterize whole populations unless they are accompanied by more numerous smaller mutations tending to modify and to integrate the effects of the larger mutations."

Stephen Jay Gould and Niles Eldredge's theory of punctuated equilibrium accepted some of Simpson's statements, such as "...in rare instances small populations would provide for possible rapid changes over short periods of time."

Simpson asserts that "...most evolutionary change is adaptive.... An essential factor is the entrance, figuratively or literally, of populations into environments that are in some respect new to them." In most cases, "...when one group replaces another of similar adaptive type, a common phenomenon in the record, much the most probable interpretation is that one of the other evolved elsewhere and is a rather recent migrant where found." But "There is no reasonable alternative to the conclusion that when a trend stops short of other limits, it has reached an adaptive limit."

Simpson---who wrote an entire book on Horse evolution (Horses: The Story of the Horse Family in the Modern World and through Sixty Millions Years of History)---rejects many common statements about horse evolution: "The most famous of all equid trends, `gradual reduction of the side toes,' is flatly fictitious. There was no such trend in any line of Equidae." He adds that `eohippus was NOT a horse, (and) is about as good an ancestor for Rhinoceros as for Equus."

Simpson's book is important for anyone interestested in evolutionary theory.

About the Author
Dr Mary J. Thornbush is currently Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham, UK. She has been conducting field-based research in geomorphology since 1999, when she examined Holocene landscape change in a fluvial landscape located in southern Ontario, Canada. She subsequently shifted to urban-based studies and has been examining environmental geomorphology in particular of weathering science since 2002, when she attended the University of Oxford for her doctoral degree and final research training. She was awarded her doctorate in 2006 and remained Senior Research Associate of the Oxford University Centre for the Environment until 2008. She became Assistant Professor at Lakehead University's Orillia Campus as part of Geography and Interdisciplinary Studies until 2010. Dr Thornbush was Visiting Research Fellow with the Initiative of Heritage Conservancy in Greece before coming to the University of Birmingham in March 2011. She continues to collaborate with human geographers as well as archaeologists in European research. Dr Thornbush is currently working on several initiatives, including an authored eBook entitled Photographs Across Time: Studies in Urban Landscapes with an archaeologist, and is associate editor for two special issues to be published by the journal Area and the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. Dr Thornbush represents the UK Chapter as part of the International Association for Geoethics, where she heads a newly formed committee that addresses issues of gender in the geosciences.

Trained as a Geographer and Educator, Dr. Casey D. Allen has always been a proponent for involving students in fieldwork. An award-winning scholar and educator, he has been conducting field-based activities since his undergraduate years in the early 1990s. His first job out of college took him to Chile and Peru where he worked as a survey engineer for a mining exploration company. After deciding to turn his focus to teaching, he earned a degree in Secondary Science Education (Southern Utah University, Cedar City, Utah) before then becoming a professional Academic Advisor and adjunct faculty member at his alma mater (BS Geography), Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. Moving on, he took a faculty position at St. George’s University (Grenada, West Indies) as the Coordinator of their combined (B.Sc/MD) program before completing his PhD in Geography at Arizona State University in spring 2008. While at ASU, Dr. Allen was a National Science Foundation GK-12 Fellow and the Associate Director for the Master of Advanced Study in Geographic Education program. Since gaining his current post at University of Colorado Denver in fall 2008, his research has focused on field experiences as tools to help people learn complex knowledge and processes better than sitting in classrooms memorizing and regurgitating. The mediums of rock decay (weathering) and environmental perception lie at the center of engagement in his learning landscape. Dr. Allen also administers two international field study programs annually: Sustainability in the Caribbean which takes place on the Island of Grenada, and his popular Geography by Rail�. Dr. Faith Fitzpatrick is a Research Hydrologist at the U.S. Geological Survey, based out of the Wisconsin Water Science Center in Middleton, Wisconsin, USA. She has been working on field-based fluvial geomorphology studies for over 30 years and has spent much of her career studying river behavior in the Great Lakes region. Her interests involve human and climate change impacts on river evolution and sediment regimes, alluvial chronologies, linking sources and sinks of stream sediment and nutrients, stream restoration and habitat, and tracking sediment-related contaminants. More recently she’s been working on fluvial dynamics in Great Lakes rivermouths. Stream issues that she’s been involved with range from urbanization, agricultural runoff, and deforestation. She teaches fluvial geomorphology and sedimentary records courses and field training at government training courses as well as the University of Wisconsin-Madison. One of her growing areas of interest is the role of fluvial processes in the behavior and fate of submerged oil and oiled sediment in riverine freshwater environments. From 2011-14 she served as Scientific Support Coordinator for the U.S. EPA’s emergency response to the 2010 pipeline release of diluted bitumen into the Kalamazoo River, Michigan, USA.

About the Author

 

Shelley Gaskin, Series Editor for the GO! Series, is a professor of business and computer technology at Pasadena City College in Pasadena, California. She holds a master's degree in business education from Northern Illinois  University and a doctorate in adult and community education from Ball State University. Dr. Gaskin has 15 years of experience in the computer industry with several Fortune 500 companies and has developed and written training materials for custom systems applications in both the public and private sector. She is also the author of books on Microsoft Outlook and word processing.

 

Nancy Graviett is a professor in the Business and Computer Science department at St. Charles Community College in Cottleville, Missouri, where she is the program coordinator for the Business Administrative Systems program and teaches within the program. Nancy is also very active with distance learning and teaches in face-to-face, hybrid, and online formats. She holds a master’s degree from University of Missouri. Nancy holds Microsoft® Certified Application Specialist certification in multiple applications and provides training both on and off campus. In her free time, Nancy enjoys quilting and spending time with family and friends.

 

Debra Geoghan is currently an associate professor of computer and information science at Bucks County Community College, teaching computer classes ranging from basic computer literacy to cybercrime, computer forensics, and networking. She has earned certifications from Microsoft, CompTIA, Apple, and others. Deb has taught at the college level since 1996 and also spent 11 years in the high school classroom. She holds a B.S. in Secondary Science Education from Temple University and an M.A. in Computer Science Education from Arcadia University. Throughout her teaching career, Deb has worked with other educators to integrate technology across the curriculum. At BCCC, she serves on many technology committees, presents technology workshops for BCCC faculty, and runs a summer workshop for K-12 teachers interested in using technology in their classrooms. Deb is an avid user of technology which has earned her the nickname “gadget lady”.

 

Alicia Vargas is a faculty member in Business Information Technology at Pasadena City College. She holds a master's and a bachelor's degree in business education from California State University, Los Angeles, and has authored several textbooks and training manuals on Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint.

Another Lombardo classic!

I find that Lombardo's translation lucid and taut, with full use of the modern idiom. He keeps things moving fast, and one often gets the feeling of wanting to recite the beauteous poem out loud!

Hackett's amazing edition could very well be the "reference" version well suited to university use and everyday use. Each book is divided into it's own sub-chapters (anywhere from 7-19 subsections)! Which makes it wonderfully easy to find any story or speech. And the "Catalog of Transformations" at the back of the book is amazing! Perfect for those wanting to have every single transformation compiled for quick reference! The generous and well spaced print is as Lombardo's other verse translations.

In my opinion Lombardo's version is the only one that rivals Penguin's classic (prose) version with Mary Innes.

Ovid's use of similes are just as important and as profound as Homer's or Virgil's. My only quip is that Lombardo doesn't employ italics when faced with a simile as he does in his other famous translations.

Nevertheless, it seems that there's nothing Stanley Lombardo can't translate! I just can't wait what he'll do next!...tackle Pindar's Odes?...perhaps complete his Dante?...or even Appollonius of Rhodes's Argonautica?

Couldn't put it down

I took a class over classic Greek and Roman literature and this was among the assigned reading. We were only accountable for half or so of the book, but I found I couldn't put it down. One of my favorite pieces of literature I've ever read, and comparing other translations, I found Lombardo's to be very readable.

Very clearly written with the stories easy to understand and relate to human emotions of today. So many words and terms relate to the stories in Metamorphoses, it helps to know the stories behind the words

I work in the trucking industry and so I hand these out to my drivers. They were less expensive on Amazon then on other site and the quality of the book is very good and the information is useful. I would recommend it as it is also a nice size - not too big and not too small.

Best publication for serious operators.

Keep a copy of the Safety Regulations in your possesion at all times when in the duty of commercial or large motor vehicle operation. Even if you large motor home is not for commercial use you shall be adaquately knowledgable about safe operation of your motor vehicle, rules, and regualtions; especially in the eyes of the law enforcement official/s that will enevitably stop and question you one day.
