Who and What Is a Minority?
Everything great and intelligent resides in the minority.
—Goethe


Although race and ethnicity often spring to mind when the word minority is used, these features are, for our purposes, not particularly important determinants of minority status. Minority groups come in all shapes, sizes, and colors, and while it is true that minorities sometimes are identified by obvious physical features like skin color, sex, height, or weight, even definitions based on physical features can shift according to circumstance. Princeton University was established in 1746, and for more than 200 years, Old Nassau admitted only males as full-time students. In 1961, Sabra Meservey was accepted into the Oriental Studies graduate program.3 She was the first and only woman officially enrolled in the school at the time, and to her credit gained a master’s degree two years later. Then, as now, women outnumbered men in the state and the country. Women were the numeric majority, but Sabra Meservey, a woman, was decidedly in the minority at Princeton University. Place and circumstance matter.
Along with demographics, majority or minority status also can be based on beliefs or behaviors. Suppose you are a member of the Republican National Committee. At a meeting of the state chairpersons, you realize that the vast majority of the committee’s membership is male. If you are a male, you are by simple arithmetic in the group’s demographic majority; if female, you are in the minority. These demographic differences might not affect your work on the committee or the reception you receive from your fellow delegates, but suppose that while talking with them, you mention that you heartily agreed with President Obama’s decision to bail out the auto companies. This position is unquestionably contrary to the committee’s and the party’s stated position, and no matter your demographic features, you have just jumped squarely into the minority.4 Your deviation from the company line has placed you there, irrespective of your sex, age, race, religion, height, weight, or accent. Even if all these other features conform perfectly to the picture of the average Republican National Committee state chairperson, you still are in the minority. Opinions matter, and most of the time, they matter more than demographics when determining your status in the groups in which you find yourself.
This example points to at least two different types of minorities, demographic minorities and opinion minorities. Demographic minorities consist of individuals with physical features that differ from those of the majorities of their membership groups. Opinion minorities, on the other hand, hold positions at odds with the majority’s. Because we are concerned primarily with influence, opinion minorities will command most of our attention, but the rules of influence operate irrespective of the type of minority—remember, in our work, minority is shorthand for groups or individuals with limited (or no) power to force acceptance of their positions. At the individual level, we are concerned with your capacity to influence others when they, not you, hold the upper hand, and research on minority influence provides the basis for this understanding. I believe it is critical to understand how minority groups exercise influence to understand how we can influence others when we do not have the power to force compliance.
Number and Power and the Definition of Legitimacy
To understand minority influence, it is important to understand what is meant by minority. In social research, minorities usually are defined in terms of number or power, neither of which, individually, captures the full meaning of the word. In combination, however, they paint a useful picture.
Number
In experimental laboratory research, number is the most common feature used to define minority or majority group status. The group with the most members is the majority and groups with fewer members are minorities. This research typically creates or assembles real or virtual groups of strangers who hold (or are said to hold) perceptions or opinions that are divergent from those of the majority, to which you belong. Research subjects may be told that 82 percent of their group holds a particular attitude, which is consistent with theirs. The subjects themselves are in the majority in this situation. Or, they might learn that only 18 percent of their fellow research participants hold a position consistent with theirs. In this case, the subjects are in the minority. The research is concerned with people’s reactions to this type of information. In some cases, the disagreement between majority and minority does not involve attitudes or opinions, but rather a simple perception—for example, you might be asked to judge the color of a large circle that is projected onto a movie screen or large flat-screen monitor. You and most of your group report seeing the circle as blue, but a small subset of the group might insist that the circle is green. How you come to grips with their disagreement on a fundamental perception, how the opposing groups interact with each other, and the conditions that lead to the minority’s success or failure in influencing the majority are the kinds of questions asked in research of this type.5
Number is used frequently in laboratory research because it is a convenient and efficient way of creating majority and minority groups, but it is only one, and probably not the most important indicator of majority or minority status. Another factor, power, often overwhelms number in determining minority status. Among other features, power has the unique capacity to define virtue or propriety, which in turn affects persuasion.
Power (or Status)
Before the end of apartheid in South Africa, whites ran the show. The black population was probably ten times that of the white population, but was considered the minority despite its overwhelming numbers. White rulers had the power to enforce their will and applied it ruthlessly. For many years, the white power structure wielded sufficient force to maintain its dominance. Number did not define majority status—power did. When the civilized world ultimately responded to the injustice of the system of apartheid through boycotts and ostracism of all things South African, the balance of power shifted. The force the white rulers of the country wielded could not be supported, and the practice of apartheid disintegrated.
Power is a key factor in defining group status. As shown in this example, power and number are not synonymous. The majority is the group with the muscle, even if it lacks numbers. A group may be accorded majority status because it controls resources—power—even if it is numerically inferior.
Writings by and about Jack Welch, the former and wildly successful CEO of General Electric, provide many interesting and instructive examples of the creative use of power, and power’s capacity to define majority and minority status. Welch was one of the most dynamic company CEOs in the history of American business. He was involved in the smallest details of his company. He seemed to know everything and everyone who worked at GE, no small feat for the boss of one of the largest and most powerful engines of the U.S. economy.
Welch often consulted with his division managers and their staffs on the many issues with which a company of GE’s size had to contend. Sometimes in these meetings, the obvious solution to problems would emerge organically over the course of the discussion. Jack Welch was an intuitive leader with an uncanny ability to work through problems, and to bring his employees with him, so that the proper plan of action evolved progressively over the course of their interactions. When it did not, he would lay out the conflicting alternatives about the decisions that could be made. Although there might be twenty people in the room, and nineteen of them felt that GE should move in one direction, the remaining voice often prevailed—if it was Welch’s.viii In this circumstance, as in many others we will consider, number did not rule, power did. Even when outnumbered, the person in charge is the majority. Number does not matter when it is confronted by superior force.
Power’s Capacity to Define Morality (or Propriety)
Obviously, the more powerful group can compel others to do its bidding, but there’s more to it than that. Beyond the obvious, power often defines what is good and what is not; it sets the guidelines of proper behavior. Those in power have the capacity to define the rules of goodness or propriety or morality—to decide or define values, good and evil. The powerful define what is right or wrong, proper or improper, and the majority almost always reserves the positive adjectives for itself. Who do you think is responsible for the quip, “To the victors belong the spoils”? Certainly not the losing team. It is extremely unusual, for example, for leaders of a victorious army to be prosecuted for war crimes, even if their armies committed atrocities as a matter of course. Conversely, leaders of losing armies are almost always defined as depraved criminals who violated the norms of good conduct, which of course are defined by the winners (who by virtue of power can define morality any way they want).
The Nuremberg War Crimes Trials, which we considered in the introduction, offer a good example of the majority’s hold over the definition of morality. The trial of Saddam Hussein in 2005 and his subsequent execution a year later provides another illustrative example of the capacity of the group in power to define right and wrong. Almost nobody who objected to Hussein’s trial argued that he was a nice guy who did not deserve his fate. Worth getting past the repetitive introduction

If you're looking for a how-to book on interpersonal influence, then this isn't the book for you. It won't help you persuade your boss for a raise, it won't help you score a date, and it won't help you get your kids to clean their room. Fortunately, I didn't buy it expecting that it would.

What this book primarily does is explain how the minority of a group can influence the majority. The author goes about this very systematically, first explaining what groups are, why group membership is important to us, how we react to people in our groups versus those outside our groups. In fact, the first "rule of influence" doesn't even come until chapter 3.

So what does the author spend all that time talking about? Aside from discussing various social psychological studies that explain some of the empirical work behind these rules, he spends a lot of time relating the material to politics, history, business, law, sports, communications, public health, and probably a few more things I've forgotten.

People buying this looking for a quick guide on how to influence groups may get frustrated by this, in which case I would suggest they skip straight to chapter 9, where the author summarizes the common tactics the majority will take to marginalize a minority position. In chapter 10, he summarizes what the minority must do. For an explanation behind the summaries, read the rest of the book. This is probably a good idea anyway since you'll want to try out the tactics at some point. At least if you fail, you'll know what went wrong.

I would also suggest watching the movie 12 Angry Men after reading this book (preferably the 1957 version). You'll see what the main character does in a whole new light.

Better as an article than a book

First, the bad news:the first seventy pages or so are just so much throat clearing. Now the good news:Page 70 forward set out clearly(for the most part), in digestable and discrete rules how to influence the majority to see your point of view. The linchpin is that the majority must see the minority as a legitimate part of the majority. Crano expertly describes how the opponents of Prop 8 in California(prohibiting same sex marriage) lost;namely, they failed to normalize gays as part of the majority by having ads showing gay couples doing what hetro couples do---buying homes, going to work, living their lives. He sums it up:"...the minority must become recognized as a legitimate part of the larger group. Unless the campaign accomplished this, the opposition to the marriage ban was destined to fail---and it did." He alos lays out that the key to persuasion, after meeting this threshold, is to be persistent, consisitent, and unwilling to concede(but be flexible in how you achieve your goals). A worthwhile addition to persuasion literature.

Great book, written by a master

Dr. Crano is a jack of all trades: he is an expert in research methods; attitudes and persuasion; social influence; prevention science. All of his work is brilliant, and this book is no exception. His love for minority influence, in particular, shows through in this book. As one of his students, I have heard Dr. Crano talk passionately about The Rules of Influence for several years. The breadth and depth of his knowledge in the area of minority influence come through clearly in this book. What also makes this book special, though, is Dr. Crano's unmatched writing ability. The prose is accessible yet lofty; it is almost as entertaining as one of his lectures! Great book by a fantastic teacher, mentor, and person.

A great intro to learning Vue 7 from the best teachers - geekatplay.com

For those that want to learn Vue for use in their 3D art, you can do no better than Ami and Vladimir over at the geekatplay.com web site. They seem like professionals both in dealing with them and in the quality of work.

Vue 7 - From the Ground Up is a new book from them which is a beginners guide to learning the "Vue 7" software available from e-onsoftware.com. This book is mainly focused on starting the user out from square one and building on the fundamentals to learning Vue 7 in a logical and non overwhelming manor.

Each chapter is laid out in an easy to read and understand format that will guide you a step at a time to understanding what Vue 7 is and how to use the basic skills of this software. At the end of each chapter is a learning tutorial for you to do (which I HIGHLY recommend). These tutorials, including some FREE add-ons that you will need for some of the exercises are available for download (again all free) from the book's web site. Personally, I would suggest you finish the learning tutorials on your own, even though the finished product is supplied on the web site and just use the materials required for the exercises where needed. That way you really get a feel of learning.

The book and chapters are well laid out and there are several color photos for you to refer to. However, I would have liked to seen a few more photos showing some key references in the book that were just talked about but not pictured. This is not a detraction in any way, just something I think there could be more of.

NOTE: while this book is mainly aimed at those wanting to get up to speed and learn Vue from the very basics on, I feel it remains a valuable resource for most anyone using this software regardless. It gives you not only the learning fundamentals, but also the knowledge to build upon so you can go to the geekatplay.com web site and continue with their excellent free tutorials on more advanced topics.

Bottom line is this book is a must own for anyone that wants to or is using Vue 7 and I can think of no one better to recommend than geekatplay.com for doing so.

This is the resource you need...

So even though it's unlikely that too many people will still be reading these reviews, I have to chime in and say that this book is more than worthwhile, even though we're up to Vue 11.5 by now. ;)

First of all, a lot of graphics software that is *not* in the Adobe Creative Suite just doesn't have published resources updated for the latest edition. Adobe seems to do much better at this, but there's more out there than Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, and After Effects, great as they are. So this really is the most recent published resource available, as far as I can well.

And as many have said, it really does cover the basics and also more intermediate things. Interface, materials, cameras, lights, objects, import... it's pretty much all there. And the more you work through this book, the more you'll understand all the reasons to get Vue in the first place, although the authors don't hit you over the head with it by any means. Even though Bryce is certainly a whole lot cheaper (and I've used it too,) Poser content creators and hobbyists will save themselves hundreds of hours of grief and miserable searches for zillions of texture files by being able to import.pz2 and .pz3 files directly. Vue has a quad view, which is so standard and so necessary for 3D programs that you can't understand how impossible it is to do without it until... well, until you have to do without it. Vue has a reasonably sized preview window instead of a miniscule postage stamp that people with the most perfect near vision still can't make much sense out of.

And these are things that really can't be understood without this book. Believe me, if you're trying to decide on software and thinking wistfully of how nice it would be to save a little money, it's just not worth it to not go with Vue. Download the PLE edition, get this book, work through it, and save your cash for the Vue Esprit-- it's $179 from some resellers.

Part of a Winning Combination!

I've wanted to learn how to use Vue for the last year--and I finally found a fun and inexpensive way to do it!

1) BUY this book. It does a great job of explaining the features of Vue and how to use them. The step-by-step tutorials are very good. I have gotten lost a couple times, but I eventually was able to figure out what I either did wrong, or what the authors meant by the direction.

2) Visit the authors' website (geekatplay.com) to view their free online video tutorials! I was very impressed with both the quality and quantity of videos. Most people don't give this much stuff away free--especially when it is this good. It definitely shows they are committed to helping others learn these skills. If you are interested in animation make sure you watch their video tutorial "Flying Over Clouds." (Number 121)

3) Download the free Vue 7 Infinite PLE (Personal Learning Edition) version from the e-on software site. It has all the features of the full version which costs $895, and it doesn't expire. Obviously, there are some limitations connected to the PLE version. One of the major limitations is that when the files are rendered they have the software's logo and watermarked applied to it. And, the files won't work with other editions of Vue. However, if your goal is to learn how to use Vue 7 without spending any money on the software this is a great way to do it.

(If you are a student or educator, you can purchase a one year Education Version of Vue 7 Infinite for $99. I ordered mine this morning. You can also download the totally free Vue 7 Pioneer version, but I don't think it has features you need for doing many of the exercises in this book.)

After a year of thinking about learning Vue, I'm actually doing it! My next purchase is going to be the "Steam Punk flying ship" used in the "Flying Over Clouds" animation tutorial. Hey, it only costs $18.50 and I've already saved hundreds of dollars!

Update (June 24, 2009): I finished this book, and now I'm learning more with Richard Schrand's "Vue 7: Beyond the Basics." Thanks Ami and Vladimir for teaching me the basics. I love your website and I keep going back to watch more!

A Special Kind of Reading Experience: "The Sufis," by Idries Shah

Until 1964, when “The Sufis” was published, Sufism was mostly the preserve of scholars, at least in the West. “The Sufis” began a new era, opening a window on Sufi activity, history and influence. Shah presents new information in an accessible way, and many readers feel that it’s a book they’ve been looking for. Stories, history, unusually lucid perspectives on human nature and spirituality, and challenges to assumptions and established ways of thinking, are intertwined throughout, eventually combining to produce a special kind of reading experience.
“The Sufis” begins with the story of “The Islanders.” This is a “teaching story;” Shah’s name for a form of literature whose internal structure and dynamics can support and provoke experience in the reader (a Sufi speciality). Sometimes the learning happens at the time of reading, when the story helps us make sense of perceptions and experiences. Often, as Desmond Morris, author of “The Naked Ape” and ”The Human Zoo” observed, it’s a delayed effect that happens when we encounter situations in life that evoke a story. Morris is one of the leading observers of human nature who has commented on Shah’s work; others include author Doris Lessing, psychiatrist and author Arthur Deikman, and psychologist and author Robert Ornstein.
After “The Islanders” sets the stage, “The Travelers and the Grapes”—another teaching story—opens a discussion of the contextual background. Here we start to look at the history of interaction of cultures; often concealed because spiritual practices not sanctioned by the authorities could have brought severe penalties over the last thousand years or so. Here we also begin to see the Sufi approach to spiritual development; which I’ve found to be unparalleled in lucidity about human nature.
The chapter on “The Elephant in the Dark,” based on Rumi’s story, continues the intertwining of narrative, perspectives on human nature, and intercultural history. Then we meet the joke-figure Mulla Nasrudin, “one of the strangest achievements in the history of metaphysics,” whose antics illustrate “situations in which certain states of mind are made clear;” usually when he’s acting the idiot. Subsequent chapters introduce classical Sufis, including Rumi, Attar, Omar Khayyam, ibn el-Arabi, and el-Ghazzali, and trace the influence of Sufi thought and action on Western figures (such as Chaucer and St. Francis) and groups. We also meet the work of Western Sufis, such as Richard Burton (whose “Kasidah,” a remarkable poem of great depth, is reviewed), and are introduced to The Dervish Orders, The Creed of Love, Magic and Miracles, and more.
Of course, over the five decades since its publication, some things have changed. In his discussion of Sufi orders, which do not need traditional buildings and grounds except as required by local economic and political conditions, Shah mentions that “one Arabic publishing company is a Sufi organization. In some areas all the industrial and agricultural workers are Sufis.” This might have changed in the political, economic and military upheavals of the past fifty years, but the principle remains the same; the “order” is in the hearts and networks of people. The “beautiful tomb,” of the great teacher Data Ganj Bakhsh (Ali el-Hujwiri), in Lahore, “venerated by people of all creeds,” was bombed by terrorists in 2010. The Idries Shah Foundation print and Kindle editions of “The Sufis” omit the original Introduction by Robert Graves (I like Grave’s commentary but “The Sufis” is complete without it).
Still, five decades after its publication, “The Sufis” continues to be relevant. At first reading, and later re-readings after intervals, “The Sufis” continues to pack advanced spiritual psychology, eye-opening history, and impacts that both confirm and extend perceptions, and highlight and disconfirm prejudices and assumptions, into a special reading experience.

His first and fundamental book on Sufism

Mostly I am responding to the review by Wrightson, who sounds like an anti-Shah crusader, perhaps jealous that his pitiful and venomous self-published book does not sell – I could not persuade any of my local libraries to buy it while all of them, both public and academic ones, carry MANY books by Idries Shah.
I think he confuses Sufism with some systems with which Sufism does not share much, and then he expresses his disappointment that he did not get what he wanted but what is actually there. It is like expecting some intoxicant but discovering that you get nutritious substance but without the expected kick. So, he actually fights his own demons but why he involves the book The Sufis and the most remarkable teacher Idries Shah is incomprehensible to an objective observer. The real Sufism is not some kind of either intellectual speculation or religious emotion. It is a pragmatic system which can lead the honest to self-development, to transcending ordinary confusion, from being as it were blind to Reality.
Non-Sufis and fake Sufis are AT BEST people who (to continue the analogy) are blind but through frequent bumping into objects (our ordinary trial and error existence) memorized what is located where in order to avoid future painful collisions. Such a system can be used as an ersatz of real perceptions but in the fluid world the ‘memorized location of objects’ is constantly changes. Therefore this method of living is far from being efficient, as we can see in our daily lives (full of painful mistakes and misunderstanding) and by watching/reading the news, usually about bad things. We ALL use such a system because we do not know how to develop ‘sight’.
Thus comparing Sufism to anything else but itself, as Wrightson does, is a misunderstanding. All these other systems are not capable of leading the seeker to developing “the sixth sense”. And they are NOT a source of Sufi inspiration, Sufism does not owe anything to them whatever the superficial similarities. These other systems are fossils of what once might have been a living school, as contemporary Sufism is. Nowadays, they have only mostly cultural, anthropological, historical, quasi-religious or other significance, but they have nothing to do with what Shah describes and what Wrightson does is worse than comparing apples and oranges.
The Sufi books do not function as a source of secrets how to go to heaven or to live heavenly life here and now. I remember talking to a manager of an ‘esoteric’ bookstore who said that Idries Shah just teases but never openly says how things are. This eager would-be ‘esotericist’ craves to be told what to memorize and use, as in a secret society or something. He barks up the wrong tree.
The secret is that there is no secret of THIS type. The books, plus guidance and HONEST effort may lead to the ability of seeing this secret by developing the skill, the ability, the organ of seeing. How could you explain to a country bumpkin an intricate scientific concept? He needs to go to appropriate schools first, to build a foundation. There is a wonderful analogy to that in the tale of The Algonquin Cinderella in another book by Idries Shah World Tales. Only the honest youngest sister can see the Invisible One. The only reviewer here who gave the book only one star (and he also did it with other books by Idries Shah) is perhaps angry that he is like the older sisters of Cinderella: they may desire to see the Invisible One but have not developed the prerequisite ‘sixth sense’, they did not have what it takes. The hopeful thing is, that the older sisters, at one level of interpretation, can be seen as older selves, can be transcended, can actually morph into the youngest sister, capable of seeing the Invisible One. Can the angry crusader undergo such a metamorphosis? Of course. Epiphanies on the road to Damascus happen more often than we think. Here is your chance Wrightson. Are you a sincere seeker after truth or just a desperate peddler of your own claptrap?
But I should not confront your ghoul so directly, as you can read in The Riddles, one of stories in Shah’s World Tales. It can help. It did help me. I was perhaps as full of air as you are. What a relief it was when my ghoul collapsed under its own weight like the Soviet Union.
Unless the reader becomes like Cinderella, they have no chance of success and there musings lead nowhere, which may cause eruptions of anger, depression, disbelief and many other emotions except the only result that matters: seeing.
A good method of increasing one's suitability for the Teaching is by being generous. It helps to eliminate anger, greed and self-esteem which are major stumbling blocks on the road to develop new perceptions. These perceptions are not esoteric in the sense that everyone has them to some degree in his own area of expertise, either his profession or hobby. The Way of the Sufi (yet another book by Idries Shah) is a specific methodology which helps one find higher perceptions in all areas of life, going beyond one’s forte. Good luck to the honest seekers.
Of course honesty is not necessarily inborn, so do not despair, you can develop it. Start by choosing the title which is in the format which you already like, otherwise you will start with an additional handicap, on top of all the other ones which we already have with all our fascination-cum-worries of the phenomenal world.
With time and practice you can transcend your ordinary anxieties and your linear thinking. But not if you are greedy for quick results, even disguised (dishonestly) as search for truth (Seeker After Truth may disabuse you of such ideas).
I just discovered on Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sufis) more specific information about The Sufis new edition made available for the 50th anniversary of the original publication.

This is Shah's first and fundamental presentation of Sufism in the West where in the last century only scarce authentic knowledge was available (like his father's books) or one could find only uninformed and superficial accounts of a scholarly "orientalist" type.

Here, one can find out how Sufism has been invisibly influencing the world affairs for millenia, perhaps starting with antiquity, including the Greek ancient philosophers of our own tradition.

Shah was attacked by entrenched interests but he has proven by his own life and publications that real Sufism is alive and that any other form is just imitation, whether piously religious or academic.

One can read about Sufism or in Sufism, but a historian of, say, medicine is usually not capable of purforming a surgery on you. To whom would you rather go for consultation? Probably a surgeon rather than a historian, however bright and entertaining.

Same in the most important area of your own development, your own understanding of where you came from and where will you go.

Ordinarily, we in the West have had a choice of believing the religious myths or, seeing their inadequacy, becoming atheists or agnostics. Shah provides the better, and the only real, alternative: knowledge which may come if the intended receiver has become capable of receiving. Sufism is a miracle as if teaching my dog how to read, talk and reason. If I can admit that I am relatively as stuipid vis-a-vis the real mechanisms of life as my dog is relative to reading - then I can start from this posture of humility, having emptied myself of dirty water to admit the clean one.

Enjoy. Perhaps at first only at the level of clearing the underbrush and admitting new information.

The Amazon Kindle Edition of 'The Sufis' by Idries Shah, 2015

This book was first published by the author in 1964. I wish to thank the Idries Shah Foundation for making this important work on Sufi Thought available to its readers in the digital format.
I was also impressed by the Amazon Digital Services Inc.,(the seller of the book). After placing my order for this book I started to 'thumb through' it's pages within 15 minutes on my iPad, while I received the sale statement in my email the next morning!
I compared this digital edition of 'The Sufis' to my old paper copy ( by The Octagon Press, London, 1989). I was pleasantly surprised to see numbers in blue color in the text of this book. The 'blue numbers' are hot-linked to annotations at the end. These annotations provide explanations, authors and relevant publications etc.
There are quite a few positive, thoughtful, and comprehensive reviews of 'The Sufis' available to the interested person here on the Amazon Website and I happen to be in agreement with their views and would avoid redundancy.

Great book on the role of women in US history.

The introduction to this book suggests that women’s history (and I mean in the USA) can be studied in stages, with each era of history bringing changes and progress. Take for instance Amelia Earhart, which the authors use as an example of courage. While she was definitely an innovator, as there were few women aviators at the time, she wasn’t the first woman in the USA to show courage. Half a century earlier, hadn’t thousands of women taken risks when their families moved into the Great Plains? Anyone who saw the recent remake of True Grit knows that the “pioneer woman” of the 1800’s had to have assumed great risk. It is for this reason, that the authors advise the following criteria when reading this book; identify the historical source, ask who created it, ask why, ask how the attitudes (or laws) of the time influenced the recording, and ask who it was meant for.
An early chapter here covers the issue of women in early America, with special emphasis on those that were enslaved. The authors write about how rice harvesting was a back-breaking job, often done by the women. They cut through the Uncle Ben and Aunt Jemima stereotypes, and show us how the reality was even worse. The women performed hard manual labor, and relatively few were tasked strictly with cooking, cleaning, and childcare.
A more interesting piece is the issue of something called “Interspousal Tort Immunity.” Under English Common Law, the husband and wife were considered one person, so they could not sue each other. The wife could therefore not claim any damages of her husband beat her or stole from her. The chapter is comically titled “Why Diamonds Really Are a Girl’s Best Friend,” in that the jewelry bestowed as an engagement gift was in fact a defense. A woman could sue a man for breaking an engagement, because it was considered a breach of contract. However, in the event of such a broken promise, she was expected to keep the jewelry, so she wouldn’t have to humiliate herself by going to court. As for a married woman, her jewelry was the last thing that creditors could seize if her husband defaulted his debts.
As I mentioned before, women of the pioneer era are detailed, along with convents in the cities. The contribution of the nuns was covered in an earlier book titled Women of Faith, where the Chicago nuns were the founders of education for children in Chicago. In Women’s America, however, the New York nuns are said to have gotten some political clout (though not necessarily power) by establishing childcare and education institutions. It was the only situation where the male politicians would listen to the women, because without the nuns and their schools, the city would be caring for the poor on its own. In anti-tax USA, the last thing the politician wants to do is tax the men to pay for social services. As discussed in Women of Faith, the anti-Catholic sentiment of the time encouraged the establishment of the convent schools, as a way of alleviating (what was seen as) the Irish Catholic root of poverty.
Further chapters discuss the change in rape prosecution, how the boredom of the post-war housewife led to Friedan’s feminist movement, and the changes with regard to education, health, technology, law, ad government. The authors do great justice to the history of American women with their unbiased research and writing. From the very beginning, they advise the scholar to examine the primary and secondary sources, so they can be aware of bias and undue favoritism. While this might seem new to some, keep in mind that bias is always evident in history. Remember the old adage, “history is written by the victors?” Now remember the other one, that “to the victors go the spoils of war?” By studying the sources carefully, you can get to the root of history, and cut through all the prejudices. That in itself is the basis for the study of any history.

Good tutorials, but missing or insufficient steps, projects not completed, and where is the downloadable code?

I was hoping this book would be an easy read and would get me up and programming in Windows 8 quickly. However, with all the errors and missing steps in the code, I'm having to spend A LOT OF TIME troubleshooting and fixing. Projects are not completed and steps are left out. I wouldn't mind so much if the author had stated that you need to finish extra steps before you compile. But, he says write this code and then compile. Well, it doesn't compile. Not without a lot of troubleshooting to see what was missed. If you're going to leave out steps, please say so.

I also had a hard time with the plugins. There wasn't enough explanation or detail for how to install and use them. I had to google the plugins and find instructions and discussions in order to figure out how to do what was suggested in the book.

Nowhere in the book does it say there is downloadable code in case you get stuck. Fortunately, I found that there is code available on the publisher's website. It would have saved me a lot of time looking had the author said it was there.

That said, I found that the harder I had to work to figure out how to compile, the better I was learning. I just wish I wasn't so annoyed and frustrated.

I do like the projects and tutorial aspect of the book. I learn a lot better this way.

Thank you for sharing your story ! It really did make me cry while reading. I was recently diagnosed with a Myocardial Bridge and completely understand the frustration you went through trying to get your diagnosis. Also, after reading who your physician was , I will share that Dr. Schnittger is also my Cardiologist. Thank you again for sharing your journey and hope this helps others realize that we have to be our own advocates, because no one knows our bodies better than ourselves. I hope you are enjoying life to the fullest!!

Imperialism in the 21st Century revisits and updates the analysis of Russian revolutionary Vladmir Ilyich Lenin, who showed how the monopoly stage of capitalism had produced imperialist wars, and only social revolution could bring them to an end. Two world wars of unimaginable destruction confirmed Lenin’s basic thesis and also led to a complete reorganization of world politics.

The rising tide of anti-colonial national liberation movements and the emergence of a powerful socialist bloc of countries after World War ll re-shaped some of the characteristic features of modern imperialism but not the organically expansionist tendency of monopoly capitalism. The dynamic of inter-imperialist rivalry for control of colonies and spheres of influence which led to World War l and World War II was replaced with a new war drive against their common enemy: socialism. The post-Cold War world order delivered unrivaled hegemony to the U.S. ruling class, who became drunk with success, but there are growing contradictions that may explode the world order once again.

Excellent and well referenced book discussing the changing nature of imperialism over the past century. It also includes Lenin's own work which is nice for cross referencing come of the points made by this group and Lenin.

This is an important and very timely assessment of how imperialism has evolved since publication of Lenin's "Imperialism: The Highest Stage of Capitalism" (included in its entirety) 99 years ago. It examines and reaffirms Lenin's core theses - the tendency toward monopoly, the built-in drive toward war, the domination of finance capital, particularly the banks, etc, while outlining critical changes in global politics over the past century. Chapters include, "From inter-imperialist war to global class war," covering roughly the period of 1945-1991, and "The unipolar era of imperialism and its potential undoing, covering 1991-present. "Imperialism in the 21st Century" is a must read for activists and all who are interested in world politics.
