Heartwarming and educational.

What a great book to have come out in the midst of all the Lincoln fervor from the films and books that are out now for adults. I was worried that this book would be too cluttered with text, but it actually has a very charming story in it.

It starts by alluding to the Lincoln Bedroom ghost story. Then a little girl goes on a tour of the White House (lucky kid!) and sees ghostly Abe looking sad. She finds out he hasn't left the White House in a very long time. So they go on a tour of the United States. She shows him how things have changed, mostly for the better, and are still changing-- to keep getting better.

It ends with Lincoln feeling much better about the state of the country. It is surprisingly heartwarming, the illustrations, while muted in color are effective and expressive.

I really enjoyed this book. It would be great to read to early elementary schoolers. Say from 1st to 3rd grade.

We have been huge fans of Lane's other books, but this one fell very short for us. I had hoped for a history lesson hidden inside a fun tale ala John, Paul, George, and Ben. What I got was VERY light on facts, and very heavy on pretension. Sadly, this book didn't keep the attention of any of my 7 kids (ages 8 months to 12 years) who will ALL sit and enjoy Smith's other books. Save your money and skip this one.

Great Book

This book tells me almost everything I need to know to start my first vegetable garden, from planning my garden to dealing with pests. I can't imagine a better all-around book for gardeners who live in the Bay Area or California coast. The information is all specific to local micro-climates, with no space wasted on information that is not relevant in this part of the country. My only criticism is that I would have left out the handful of recipes scattered in the book.

Michael Pollen was right. If you buy one book for gardening in the bay area, buy this on. It is all you need. It shows when to plant what vegetables with a very easy to follow visual chart. It explains in detail the hows and whys of vegetable gardening. We are starting a small farm, and I would be lost without this book. I am constantly referring back to it for information. I cannot disagree more with the fellow who gave it one star and said it was a disorganized mess. Many of us in the gardening community swear by this very well organized, detailed and informative book. It is my vegetable gardening bible!

I've been waiting for this book since Dec 2009 from the great reviews of the earlier edition. A great book for the beginner and experienced. This is mainly for veggies, but does go over some native plants, pests, sun and climate, and recipies. This guide is a great read and highly recommended.

PLEASE, READ THIS.

I have a few things to say about this book before I start my review, I hope it helps someone.
First off, I grew up reading star wars. Started with the kids books obi wan kenobi adventures, when he starts off not even getting picked as an apprentice to falling in love with Siri and almost leaving the jedi order. I've read all the Old republic books. The Bane Trilogy (which is a great precursor book to this one) all of Timothy Zahn's works, and the New Jedi Order Series, and pretty much everything in between. A good 60+ books I would say with confidence.
Secondly. I abhor the decision made to turn the Expanded Universe into....the....legends.........It physically angers me. That all those works done to make Star Wars into My star wars, the star wars I know and love, are turned into stories merely so Disney can have creative f***ing insight to make their new movies--......... It was a poor and crap decision. Bc now everything I know is out the window to pave the way for the crap they're wanting to do now. The movies could have been great if they did the yhuuzhang vong invasion....but I digress.....
Thirdly. This is the best book about the force I have ever read. Those 60+ books I've read don't include the omnibus's, comics, or the guide books they've created to explain the star wars universe. Yet, this book talks about the force in a way that the matrix animated movie explains what the matrix was really about.

The author goes so in depth with the force, what it is, what its capable of, that some chapters you'll read twice just to be sure you gathered all the info correctly. So either he had Lucas on speed-dial to ask him about what the force really is, or he has a better understanding than even Lucas himself has. Bc he does a great job explaining the capability of the force and its uses that can be implemented if merely looked at a different way. Things the jedi could never do bc of their almost religious way of using it and seeing it as something given, instead of something that exists to be used. As always, its about point of view in how you perceive it.

The book starts off amazingly with the death of the main character. Entices you into wondering "what just happened?" and then delving into the...I believe 50-75 year journey of this barely aging, very mysterious, almost mad Dr. like Sith who delves into the science and experimentation of what the force can do, and he does it well. Almost beautifully. As mentioned before, the Bane Trilogy is a good pre-book series to read, as those set up everything that this book continues. The bane trilogy is one of my favorites, and is the beginning of the Rule of 2 sith. This book, is basically the culmination of of a thousand years of building, planning, and gaining knowledge to bring about the downfall of the jedi and the coming of the sith. They go into detail about the secret contacts, meetings, almost illuminati like gatherings of the galaxies most powerful people, and how they are all being manipulated to do the sith's bidding. Eventually finding palpatine, and delving into his previously unknown backstory and even the intro of Darth Maul and how he came to be in an almost "slap on the knee I can't believe that just happened they had no idea they were giving maul to a sith instead of a jedi" moment.

The story follows Plagueis's experiments into solving the biggest thing the Sith have looked for, immortality, and he FINDS it. It follows the story of Palpatines training and involvement into becoming the President of the Republic Galaxy basically.

AND....in a sith ritual to put a veil over the jedi.......basically tells you what happened that brought Anakin into the world.

And in one part, IF IT WERE CANON, places Plagueis being present during the time of episode I. Literally in the background of when the ship first lands on Coruscant when they're looking at Anakin knowing that this is the child they basically created and knew he would be the future.

Which just goes to upset me more that this is just....legends.......grrrrrrr.......

But anyway, I've downvoted all the 1 star reviews about "lack of character development bc of a pretentiousness of the authors inability to blah blah blah I'm probably an art history major and am filled with years of culture that make me better than you and use big words bc I'm smart blah blah blah"
The story starts out with Plagueis being old, almost if not over 100, for a good reason it starts here. and Palpatine wasn't trained as a child, bc sith apprentices are different from jedi, they don't come as babies all the time, look at Dooku. Its more of someones ideals than it is them just being young, and they explain Palpatines desires to join and the "how it happened" very well. So character development is good. Action isn't everywhere, but this is more about learning about previously unknown origins and new facts about things we've never thought of than a book of Sith going on a killing rampage.

All in all, I bought this a while ago on paper back, and wanted it on my kindle. So I BOUGHT IT AGAIN. Bc I'm that happy with it.

A necessary story... but could have been better

I really wanted to like this book. I had just finished the Darth Bane trilogy and was excited to dive into the next part of the story.

*Spoilers*
This book is very different than the Darth Bane books. The writing style is a bit pretentious at times, and requires a bit more from the reader than I'd want from a star wars book. There is very little action, and the Sith spend the entire time plotting and scheming. I know the Sith evolve to the point, and this is a very necessary part of the story, but it could have been more engaging.

The last 3rd of the book started to redeem itself, and then the ending... was terrible. The final showdown between Plageuis and Sidious was pathetic. You can't even call it a showdown. There was no fight, no grand confrontation. You never hear anything from Plageuis, he doens't fight back, and the story ends. The book should really be called "The political career of Darth Sidious"

I give the book 3 stars because there are good moments in the story, and it's very important for setting up the prequel movies.

Great insight into one of the most enigmatic figures from the prequel trilogy

One of the more interesting portions of the prequel trilogy of Star Wars films came in Episode III, where Palpatine relates the story of Darth Plagueis the Wise to Anakin Skywalker. According to the legend, Plagueis learned to use the Force to achieve immortality, only to have his apprentice murder him. "Ironic," Palpatine concludes, a self-satisfied smirk on his face. "He could save others from death, but not himself." After reading James Luceno's novelization of Darth Plagueis' life and exploits, that smirk takes on much greater meaning.

The novel covers most of Plagueis' career as a Sith master, starting from the time that he himself killed his own master. Because of this, it covers a lot of territory already established in Star Wars canon. This is both a blessing and a curse, as this gives the book the chance to provide a unique alternative perspective to previously visited events but requires some familiarity with other prequel-era Expanded Universe lore. This is compounded by the fact that Plagueis himself is very much a behind-the-scenes manipulator rather than a warrior, which means that he is usually shown reacting to an event occurring outside of the novel's scope. As this was the first EU book I'd picked up in a while, and given my lack of exposure to the EU comics, I had to run to the internet every so often to familiarize myself with some of the backstory. This is an unavoidable flaw given the context and characters, but I still feel that is a flaw nonetheless.

Aside from this drawback, I found the book excellent. The writing and characterization are key strengths here. Palpatine in particular, who has always been one of my favorite Star Wars characters, is especially well-done, and it's fascinating to see him evolve as a Sith Lord growing into his own mastery. The danger here was that Palpatine as an apprentice risked undercutting the confident, powerful figure we see in the movies, but the Palpatine in this book melds nicely with the Palpatine we see later on.

Luceno also handles the pacing quite well. As the novel covers a large portion of Plagueis' life, there was a definite risk of speeding through decades of material. While chapters do tend to leap ahead years or decades, especially in the beginning, it manages to avoid feeling disjointed or rushed. It's just long enough to hit the essential points while not getting overly caught up in itself.

All things considered, this is a worthy addition to the EU canon and to any Star Wars fan's library. For those seeking greater insight into the Dark Side of the Force and the Sith Order, look no further than Darth Plagueis.

Clever and entertaining opening book.

This book -from Sergey Kasparov (not Garry's parent) offers a very clever repertoire against 1.e4. Many black players have problems to deal with long theoritical lines, and to fight against attacking variations. This is the book for them ! Kasparov offers a solid opening choice, not much studied, with less theory and still a reliable position, for strategical players who hope to outplay their opponent in the ending or a closed positional middle game. By playing against 1.e4 ...d6 2.d4 Nf6 3.Nc3 e5 !? black forces white either to enter a queenless middlegame, or the main and most solid line of the Philidor defense. The author covers both variations, shows all the ideas based on strong players' games. He does not give a lot of lines -those are openings of "feeling" more than forced moves -and anyway the serious player will check variations and new games with computer before his games. I liked the humourous and light tone - Sergey K. does not promise the "truth" in the opening, and overall I believe this is a very useful book, with exercices at the end, that will enable the reader to check if is ready to use the "Kasparov opening".

In this worthy sequel to The Adventures of Captain Underpants, Pilkey maintains the original's satiric, self-referential formula as he revisits fourth-grade pranksters Harold and George, along with their school principal and principle nemesis, Mr. Krupp (aka superhero Captain Underpants). Trouble begins when Harold and George sabotage a science fair and are punished with "The Invention Convention Detention." Bored, the boys collaborate on a comic book about Talking Toilets. To their surprise, the Toilets come to life and Mr. Krupp's alter ego is called into service. Worst of all, even the brave Captain Underpants may be no match for the Toilets' leader, "nearly a ton of twisting steel and raging porcelain" known as the TT 2000. Pilkey illustrates in uncomplicated black-and-white line drawings with washes of gray, and offers "Flip-O-RamaTM," which requires turning a page back and forth for low-low-budget animation ("Don't forget to add your own sound-effects!"). He promises "extremely graphic violence" in scenes of "a giant toilet getting its shiny hiney kicked," ridicules teachers named "Ms. Ribble" and "Miss Anthrope" and decides that the story just wouldn't be complete without "upchucking." Bart Simpson could learn a few things from the subversively hilarious Harold and George, who consider inventing a robot urinal ("The Urinator"), then decide, "They'll never let us get away with that in a children's book. We're skating on thin ice as it is!" Ages 7-10.

Grade 3-6This epic novel opens with an introductory cartoon strip that tells the top-secret truth about how two kids, George and Harold, used the 3-D Hypno-Ring to hypnotize their principal, who now becomes Captain Underpants whenever he hears fingers snaping. In this second adventure, the boys are banned from attending the annual Invention Convention and sent to detention to keep them out of trouble. This, of course, is impossible, so they sneak into the school that evening and tamper with all of the inventions to wreak havoc. They also make copies of their newest comic strip of vicious attack toilets and the daddy monster of them allTurbo Toilet 2000. The copy machine is an invention that duplicates into live matter all images it copies and the attack toilets come to life. The wild story actually comes to a logical conclusion, but it really doesnt matter. The fun is in the reading, which is full of puns, rhymes, and nonsense along with enough revenge and wish fulfillment for every downtrodden fun-seeking kid who never wanted to read a book. The cartoon drawings and the amazing flip-o-rama pages make this book so appealing that youngsters wont notice that their vocabulary is stretching. Hooray for Captain Underpants! Suprisingly funny at every turn. Great for all ages.

My then 9 year old fell in love with these books and had to own every single one of them so he could read them over and over again. Once he finds a series he loves he can’t ever seem to put them down, this was easily one of his favorites.
My youngest who is now 8 is getting into them as well. It takes a lot of to get him interested in a series of books but I love to hear him in his room laughing as he reads through the books.
Dav Pilkey uses his incredibly gifted imagination to write a very entertaining book for all ages. George and Harold's ideas while at first seem innocent enough they end up causing dilemmas that even the amazing Captain Underpants can't resolve. Instead of panicking, George and Harold come up with crazy ideas that surprisingly work and save the day, plus more!

Awesome dad book

Started buying this series for my husband to read to our toddler on his nights to read! My husband was griping that he only had a few books that he would read to our son because of his own preference so we got a captain underpants and haven't looked back! My husband enjoys reading these to our 3 year old son and our son loves daddy's enthusiasm, voices and excitement reading them! Wonderful buy for any dad's looking for books they enjoy reading as well!

Must be very entertaining

My kid loves the Captain Underpants series. Only two problems though:

1) Why does anyone want to read about a cartoon character running around in their underpants?
2) My son reads them so fast we have to order in bulk.

Seriously, my son used to hate reading but read multiple books in the series at a record pace. I wish I had called Guiness Book of World records but who knew? I didn't even think he would finish one without being forced to read. +1 for the wife. Good decision.

Fraser is Professor of History and Education at the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development at New York University and Senior Vice President for Programs at the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation. He is the author of numerous books and articles on the history of education and teacher education.� His most recent book is Preparing America’s Teachers: A History.

Great look into k-12 (some 16) education- recommended read

Great book looking at the history of k-12 (and come higher) education in the U.S. I read this book for a class, but have gone back and used it since with my research, and it is very easy to follow. My focus is on higher education, but it is important to understand the K-12 system. I wouldn't say it is the most in-depth read, but combined with other books which will go into more detail, it is very helpful to provide an overview and understand many things which shaped education in this country.
I bought the book used and it came in perfect condition (other than those pesky 'used' stickers which never seem to come off cleanly), and the shipping was excellent. I have bought a great deal of academic books through amazon for classes and research, and they have the best deals and shipping is usually great (plus it's a lot easier than going around to different book stores or websites).
