Attorney's Guide

As a practicing lawyer who earns a living in the criminal courts, I found this book an excellent and informative guide to this often problematic area. The authors introduce the subject in a way that is easy for the beginner to comprehend, but at the same time include sufficient detail to answer many of the most pressing problems facing a defence team in court.

A great intro for the beginner

Having left behind my interest in genetics in order to pursue tax accountancy, I've always been fascinated by accounts of DNA typing. This book provides a wonderful introduction that is accessible to even the novice geneticist like myself. Much of the information Rudin and Inman give is quite practical; with some help from a friend who works in a medical lab I was able to set up my own electrophoresis gels and PCR. A word of caution to the amateur, however: make sure you practice before drawing any conclusions from the "evidence." My wife, Amy, wouldn't speak to me for a week after I claimed that a stain on our bed linen did not match my DNA. It turned out that she had spilled some ice cream.

A must-have for any DNA criminalist or criminal lawyer

I have a BS in genetics and biochemistry and am looking to enter into a forensics lab. This book is an EXCELLENT resource for an entry-level criminalist, criminal lawyer, or the non-scientist interested in this topic. It was organized from basic genetics to higher-level interpretation issues and included tons of diagrams, pictures, and relevant case studies. This book did an outstanding job explaining complicated and detailed subject matter in an easy to understand and interesting matter.

About the Author
David Luke was born in 1921 and is Tutor in German at Christ Church, Oxford. He has published articles and essays on German literature and various prose and verse translations, including Goethe’s Selected Verse (1964) for the Penguin Poets, Kleist’s The Marquise of O and Other Stories (1978) for the Penguin Classics, Thomas Mann’s Tonio Kr�ger and Other Stories (1970) and Goethe’s Roman Elegies (1977).

Nigel Reeves was born in 1939 and graduated at Worcester College, Oxford, in 1963, taking his D.Phil. in 1970. He was an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow at the University of T�bingen and, since 1975, has been Professor of German at the University of Surrey. He is also Head of Department of Linguistic and International Studies there, and Dean of the Faculty of Human Studies. He has translated stories by Kleist and Keller for the Penguin Book of German Stories and has published monographs on Heinrich Heine and Friedrich Schiller.

Kleist is probably the most disturbing and disturbed personality to have contributed to German Romantic literature and he most certainly deserves better recognition and appreciation from non-German readers. I found these translations to be involving and enjoyable, although I am told by native German speakers as well as by those who possess a profound understanding of the language that the subtleties of Kleist's artistry are highly resistant to idiomatic translation.

From the Dark Horse of German Literature

Kleist is the great, dark shadow of the German literary world. Born into a military Prussian family, he chose a literary career over the glory, order and ritual of his ancestors. He became a poet instead of an officer. He wandered from city to city, in search of a home, of solitude, a place to cultivate himself and his literary talents. He worried his friends with his demonic thoughts on suicide. He had a morose character and yet he was equally passionate. Stefan Zweig suggested he suffered from being continually extreme in everything he did, "always the superlative".

This collection of stories is not to be dismissed. "Michael Kohlhaas" is perhaps the quintessential piece; a tale of revenge and the price of vengeance, it is a universal story, appealing to our earthly desire for an "eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth". Kleist creates a world of corruption of conflict. The reader wants revenge for the protagonist but how far can one man go to attain justice? What does he lose, what does he gain?

"The Earthquake in Chile" is another disturbing tale. In the wake of a natural disaster, we learn nothing changes the minds and mindsets of people. The earth shakes but the evil of humankind remains deeply rooted.

"The Betrothal in Santo Domingo" - One could see it as the companion piece to the above. In a world of war and rebellion, who can one trust?

"The Beggarwoman of Locarno" is perhaps the most subtle and haunting of ghost stories. Not only does it revel in the mysterious but it is a morality tale revealing the foibles and flaws of a darkened human spirit.

Kleist never became a high ranking officer in the Prussian military but he saw the world falling apart all around him. His stories are a reflection of the dark times he witnessed within his time and within his psyche.

Reluctant officer and suicidal gentleman

As a playwright, German classic Kleist sits on top of the Olymp, right up there with Goethe and Schiller. He also left a relatively small prose oeuvre behind when he died at 34 (in a suicide pact). An unpublished 2 volume novel is said to have disappeared. What we have is this bunch of stories and some journalism, and letters. He is a classic, but he was no classicist (hence no boredom like eg Goethe's Elective Affinities), and also no romantic. He belonged to no school but his own.

His stories take us into worlds of madness. Passions and restrictive social norms collide and cause endless havoc. A frequent motive is what we would call 'honor killings' nowadays: people, usually women, subjected to the extreme punishment for inappropriate relations.
The title story itself (set in Napoleonic times in Italy) is not quite as extreme in this regard: the Marquise 'only' gets expelled from her parents' home and ostracized, because she does not know how she got pregnant. Hard to believe, admittedly. Hardship steels her character and she attacks: she publishes an ad asking for the father to step up, she would forgive him and marry him. When he turns up it is a man whom she had had a crush on, a Russian count and officer who had saved her from rapists during the war, and had found her fainted. Well, well. Since he had been her angel, now he becomes her devil. But all in all, this is a comparatively sane story, as far as the protagonists go.

There is Kohlhaas, the horse trader who becomes a rebel and outlaw in protest against some junkers mistreating his horses and his servant. In a very German solution, he finds justice for the horses, but also for his crimes. Blind justice with her scale works both ways.

Two cases of honor killings:
A young convent woman in Chile in the 17th century gets sentenced to death for being pregnant, gets saved on the way to the scaffold by a huge earthquake, survives, meets the father of her child, believes to be safe, and goes back to Santiago. A mistake.
A noble woman in the 14th century in Germany is subjected to a Gottesurteil (God's verdict?) by duel when an accused murderer, a knight, claims her as his alibi; her admirer challenges the bad guy. A duel is set up which is supposed to decide over truth. If her friend loses, her denial is considered a lie and she will be burned.(Hard to believe, isn't it? But as Kleist wrote somewhere, probability is not always on the side of truth.)

More violence and madness: A mulatta teenage girl in Haiti during the slave rebellion after the French revolution falls in love with a French officer from Switzerland, who is a captive in the black household where she lives. She tries to save him, which would be her end by her own people. The couple makes romantic promises, but he misunderstands her tactics for liberating him (Swiss have a reputation for being slow sometimes), and kills her.

Kleist was his own world in literary matters, did not belong to anybody's school; he was also not in any political camp, definitely not in his 'own' camp, the Prussian military aristocracy that he ran away from. But also not among the freedom singers. His take on the slave rebellion is entirely unsympathetic.

What a pity the novel got lost.

Depressing laws in early 19th century Missouri

This book involves settler-farmers and is set in Missouri in the early 19th century. Marcus Guthrie is something of a tyrant who beats his wife, and when his son, Thornton, misbehaved out in the fields when very young, he shot at him and nicked an ear. (This is unrealistic. A master sniper would have real trouble doing this deliberately with a modern rifle, and weapons of that time were a completely different matter.) Early in the book, Marcus decides to take on three slaves to keep the farm going, while he sits back and partakes of too much alcohol. Thornton effectively has to work in the same way as the slaves, so Thornton is effectively a slave, except he sleeps in the main house. The book is essentially an account of life of slaves in those times, except that Thornton, effectively being one of them, sneaks in books to one who can read. Later, it becomes too much, and they plan a slave escape.

The book has excellent descriptions, the atmosphere seems real, the characters are well drawn and overall it gives a picture of what life might have been like. (I have no idea as to how accurate it is.) There are some rather strong examples of brutality towards slaves, and the failings of the law at the time towards slaves, women, and just about anyone except the property owner. The book is very introspective, and a lot of time is spent on what the characters, and particularly Thornton, are feeling. Having said that, there are surprisingly few clues as to why certain decisions were taken while other possibilities were rejected. There are a number of references to Rip van Winkle, and the end of the book contains a major scene that occurs twenty years after the bulk. While it is a major scene, there was no lead-up explaining how the characters got into this situation, and for me, that was a little like having Hamlet's youth, his return to see the ghost, then everything deleted until the final scene. To summarize, the book is interesting, a lot of research went into it, but it really missed the chance to make a real impact. As for value for money, I think it is underpriced.

A Crime is Not Erased, thus Fear the Hangman

It is 1834 in Colombia, Missouri and the protagonist, Thornton, is a 15 year old boy. He has built up a sentiment of hatred towards Marcus Guthrie who has handled him, his son, his slaves and his wife without mercy and robbed them from their dreams while brutally humiliating them. Thornton risks his life in their strife to be emancipated from Guthrie ' s shackles. Thornton wants to blossom like the crops he tended.

Guthrie bought slaves for labour on Guthrie s Farms and said: " they weren't like white men,....God did not intend for them to walk about like white men." Thus with that he implicated loss of freedom, deprivation and cruelty for the slaves.

The story takes us through a struggle to loosen the unfortunate from the intolerable discrimination of a drunkard while they lived under circumstances where one is hunted and ran the risk to be punished with "whippings to the removal of digits with a sharp blade to mutilation and hanging."

Under restricted circumstances one finds violence, betrayal, envy, jealousy, infidelity and love across the colour bar. The trapped conspired and tried to escape a 100 miles west where one answers to no man, but yourself forever.

Laws enforced segregation with guns.Today, 180 years further, there are new laws, and one realizes that how good life can be if you have freedom. We witness how being a slave sometimes felt then, that your spirit bent and shifted positions in order to better carry the burdens of bondage. We see how old men's spirits were permanently buckled.

As the author has training in law, she shares her knowledge of crime and punishment, she shows us how unfair the laws were concerning slaves and women. She discusses the crime of murder through her concept of the Hangman. Law then, would not listen to woman or slave.

Thornton kills and manages to escape his punishment for 20 years. Here the author parallels her story with the story of Rip van Winkle, a book published in 1819. Rip is the character created by Washington Irvine, who awakes to discover he has had the luxury to sleep for 20 years through the hardships of the American Revolution (1765 -1783).

With reference to Thornton this quotation: "His own freedom no longer mattered. His emancipation from Guthrie did everything but set him free. In the eyes of the law, he had committed a murder because: "Killing a white man to defend a slave would be impossible to plead a justifiable defence".

Thornton wished he could slumber for 20 years and awake when his problem was solved. The question is posed: Does a hangman sleep somewhere and when poked/stirred with bad deeds, dare to awaken? Yes, you should be aware of your own life and fear the sleeping hangman, the arm of the law.

Good deeds would not erase the crime and you will always pay for it. The Hangman is indiscriminate." He takes a life even who did not deserve the noose but could not be proved. Killing is never the answer.

This is a historical novel focusing on law, freedom and punishment, with specific reference to the fight for freedom of slaves(1834 -1855). The author has a note of caution to all lawbreakers: "Make no mistake for the rest of your life, you will be a wanted man."

A book for a human rights campaigner, law practitioners and readers who value a touch of literary fiction, touching reality.

Los Angeles author Deborah Leigh but she has lived and experienced life living in both Europe and the US and she has returned home to lie in downtown Los Angeles. She has experience as a magazine editor, a legal eagle, and an adventurer and all of those ingredients are evident in this her debut novel.

Historical fiction seems a natural genre for Deborah and the manner in which she weaves to dissect the concept of slavery and its effects on both slaves and slave owners, including not only the aspects we have learned form other books and films and history studies, but also that rare aspect of the connections between the paradoxical groups. Love plays a factor here, as does the sacred unity of family.

Deborah has supplied a well-considered synopsis: `Thornton Guthrie works his father's land at gunpoint. The year is 1834, and men of the establishment have total control over their kin. In a unique but very wise structural decision, Deborah divides her story into three parts - Fallow Ground, Crop Rotation, and Harvest - each with double meanings as only a fine writer can serve.

Deborah's prose is poetic: `Thornton Guthrie kept one eye on the Hawken rifle his father pointed at him and one eye on the black-capped chickadees that nested in the eaves of the barn. Both scared him. If he let the birds swoop in and fly away with the spring wheat seeds he had just broadcast, his father might suspect a crop-theft conspiracy between Thornton and the birds and shoot Thornton, the bigger, slower, easier target. Marcus Guthrie had done it before, had shot his son. Thornton was seven and had milked the family cow just a half tick too slow. The animal had been ornery.' etc With an opening this intriguing and strong the reader is assured this is an author who is creating an important reputation on the basis of a debut novel. About the Author
Dr. Michele Yehieli is currently an Associate Professor in the Division of Health Promotion and Education at the University of Northern Iowa and Executive Director of Project EXPORT Center of Excellence, a project of the National Institute of Health. The recipient of many awards and honors, Yehieli completed her master's and doctorate degrees with honors in international public health at the University of California at Los Angeles. Dr. Yehieli has nearly twenty years of field experience in public health, both domestically and internationally, and she is the founder and director of the award-winning Global Health Corps.Mark A. Grey is Professor of Anthropology at the University of Northern Iowa. He is also Director of the Iowa Center for Immigrant Leadership and Integration (formerly the New Iowans Program), an award-winning program that provides consultation, training, and publications to Iowa communities, churches, organizations, and employees as they deal with the unique challenges and opportunities associated with influxes of immigrant and refugee newcomers.

This book aims to provide a practical discussion of Spark and its major components. How does it fare?

Spark is an increasingly popular Big Data technology, generally performing processing much faster than traditional MapReduce jobs.

This book is for anyone who wants to know more about Spark. In particular, the basic Spark components are discussed, and then Spark is extended with some of the more experimental components.

The book assumes a basic knowledge of Linux, Hadoop, Spark, SBT, and a reasonable knowledge of Scala. The author suggests using the internet to fill any gaps in your prerequisites knowledge.

Below is a chapter-by-chapter exploration of the topics covered.

Chapter 1 Apache Spark

The chapter opens with an overview of Spark, being a distributed, scalable, in-memory, parallel processing data analytics system. Spark can be programmed in various languages, including: Java, Python, and Scala. The examples in this book use Scala.

The chapter discusses in outline, the 4 major Spark components (i.e. Machine Learning, Streaming, SQL, and Graph processing), cloud integration, and the future of Spark. Cluster design is briefly examined, it’s noted that Spark doesn’t have its own storage system, so Hadoop is often used – this has the advantage that Spark can become another component in the Hadoop toolset.

The chapter continues with a look at cluster management, and configuring the Spark cluster. Useful discussions and diagrams explaining the Spark master, worker nodes, client nodes and Spark context are provided. This is followed by a section that examines cluster management running as: local, standalone, using YARN, using Mesos, and using Amazon’s Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2).

Next, performance is briefly examined. Topics include: cluster structure (cloud or shared boxes are often slower), putting applications on their own separate nodes, allocate sufficient memory, and filtering data early in the ETL process.

The chapter ends with a look at the cloud, it’s suggested this is the future direction of technology, with Spark as a service. Various providers are briefly discussed (e.g. Databricks, and Google cloud).

This chapter provides a helpful overview of what Spark is, its major components, its various cluster managers, Spark architecture, and its future. Subsequent chapters expand on the major Spark components, and discuss its promising future in the cloud.

Useful discussions, diagrams, configuration settings, practical example code, website links, inter-chapter links are given throughout. These traits apply to the whole of the book.

Conclusion

This book has well-written discussions, helpful examples, diagrams, website links, inter-chapter links, and useful chapter summaries. It contains plenty of step-by-step code walkthroughs, to help you understand the subject matter.

The book describes Spark’s major components (i.e. Machine Learning, Streaming, SQL, and Graph processing), each with practical code examples. Some of the template code could form the basis of your own application code.

Several of the core Spark components are extended using less well-know components, many of these are still works in progress. I’m not sure how many readers will find these chapters/sections useful, since they often involve workarounds, or the components might not exist or be superseded later – they can also distract from the book’s core. That said, if you enjoy working at the bleeding edge of technology, you’ll enjoy what these extensions add.

Although the book assumes some knowledge of Spark, for completeness, it might have been useful to have some introduction to it (e.g. explain RDDs, introduce the spark-shell etc). Developers coming from a Windows environment might struggle initially understanding Linux, SBT, JARs etc.

Despite these concerns, I enjoyed this book, it contains plenty of useful detail. Spark is a rapidly changing technology, so check the spark website for the latest changes. The book is highly recommended.

Using Spark with other big data technologies

The book provides a super fast, short introduction to Spark in the first chapter and then jump straight into MLlib, Spark Streaming Spark SQL, GraphX, etc. in subsequent chapters.

A huge positive for this book is that it not only talks about Spark itself, but also covers using Spark with other big data technologies like Hadoop, Kafka, Titan, Neo4j, HBase, Cassandra, H2O, etc. More on this below.

True to the name, sure the book covers more than simple introductory Spark topics, but it concentrates on breath than depth. There is decent coverage and enough code examples for each topic, but what it lacks is depth. There is no "best practices" or "performance" or "watch out for" type discussions or any type of advanced code.

The MLlib chapter covers Naive Bayes, K-Means and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN). For each algorithm, the theory is very briefly introduced and then jumps right into detailed code walkthroughs.

The Spark Streaming chapter introduces Streaming briefly and jumps straight into using different streaming sources and code walkthroughs of how to use them. This chapter covers TCP streams, File streams, Flume and Kafka sources.

By now the pattern of the chapters should be evident. The next chapter on Spark SQL follows the same format covering different data source like, Text, Json, Parquet, Hive and covers DataFrame/SQL code examples.

GraphX is covered in the next two chapters. Integration of GraphX with Neo4j and Titan (both HBase and Cassandra backed store) is covered extensively.

Finally H2O integration and the Databricks Spark hosted offering is discussed.

I would definitely recommend this as the second Spark book after any Introductory Spark book (or Spark Documentation).

I have several books on Spark and this is one of the best ones I've read. The book provides a good balance of introduction and advanced features to help you implement a Spark solution in your environment. The chapters are well written and the source code can be downloaded from Packt. The book also introduces other open source and commercial products that can be used with Spark to provide solutions for your own big data project.

Here are some of the chapters I found particularly helpful:

- Apache Spark MLlib - Apache's machine learning library that comes with Spark.
- Apache Spark Streaming
- Apache Spark GraphX - also includes chapters on storage of graph objects
- Extending Spark with H20
- Spark Databricks - a commercial product that makes it easier to create an analytics cluster in the cloud with Spark

The kindle version is formatted well and easy to read. You can jump to specific chapters or read the entire book from start to finish. Good luck in your Big Data endeavors.

New to Photography? This is REQUIRED IMHO!

I cannot say enough about how exceptional this book is, in instruction AND value!

If you cant understand exposure and the 3 parts of the exposure triangle you will never progress and you will always be somewhat lost. This book breaks it all down in small easy to retain steps with excellent color photos to illustrate exactly what they are talking about. I have below average reading comprehension due to age, health issues and just not being bright! I feel very strongly that if it got through to me, you will have great success. And heres the thing... Exposure is just one of the aspects of photography this book will teach you. Starting with equipment in the first chapter, to post production basics in the last chapter.

It covers EVERYTHING from understanding the different shooting modes, lenses, available light, flash, you name it.

I purchased this book along with my Canon SX50HS camera and I went from shooting auto to manual in one week and again, im a slow learner! Speaks volumes for this book.

I enjoyed the book so much i went back and read it in its entirety a month later. At that point I read "Stunning Digital Photography" which is an excellent EXCELLENT book in its own right, but Im glad I started with this book here.

I will be purchasing an enthusiasts level DSLR very soon and with that I plan to buy one of the companion books with my models name in the title (all available on Amazon).

I would also suggest giving your cameras manual a good reading if you havent done so.

In my opinion, if you want to have a good understanding of photography basics, you cant do better than starting with The Beginner's Photography Guide.

This is a very good, well written book on quality paper. It is an excellent overview of the subject with enough detail and explanation to give you a solid foundation of the concepts of digital photography. Highly recommended for "Beginners" and even intermediate photographers can find it a useful refresher.
